Eh, skeevy looking lady loitering outside an abandoned house who's evasive when questioned, I have no issue with her being brought in.

Meth is a plague on society.  Legalize pot already and just divert those resources to eradicating meth.

I'm taking the side of not arresting people for a drug possession charge when they don't have the drug. It would be the same as a cop arresting you for a drug possession charge because cocaine residue was found on your money.

90 percent of U.S. bills carry traces of cocaine:

Not quite the same, there are plenty of legitimate reasons to carry money around, less so pill bottles filled with urine.

If meth heads are in fact using used urine to distill into more meth, as the article states, it would be just like finding her with a sack full of psuedophedrine.  Perhaps not exactly an illegal drug yet, but easily processed into one, which is why you can be busted for paraphernalia for having above a certain amount of it on you.

Cops don't arrest you for that.  They arrest your money and then press charges against it.  Since your money can't afford a lawyer, the cops usually win, and then get to keep your money.

I was unaware they will do that, but don't see a problem with an officer trained to detect it hooking her up. Meth is a scourge. She wasn't tazed and no dog was shot. I don't get the 'pigs' reference in this case. But I'm happy to know who feels that way if that wasn't just a really good troll.

Being a police officer is generally a noble and honorable position, but if the choice is between a meth-head and a police officer citing said meth head for possession of urine contaminated with meth, I'm probably on the side of the meth head. That level of desperation requires treatment, not incarceration.

I completely agree. That is a matter for the judicial system tho. IMHO the cop saw the sings, identified the problem, and got her off the street.

I agree too. Cops can't order a person into rehab, but judges can. Sometimes the best thing that can happen to an addict is to get arrested.

The police, while technically an executive function, are the de facto point of contact for the judicial system. The solution needs to start prior to arrest, not in court, because the various mandatory sentences have destroyed the judicial ability to handle addiction.

I don't see the big deal, if you fail a drug test in south dakota your urine test can be used against you as possession.

This does remind me of the movie Junkie where a drug dealer gets killed and they bleed him and inject his blood to get a heroin fix.

Deputies also discovered a pill bottle filled with urine. Wingo said that while the container belonged to her daughter, "it was her urine that was in the bottle," reported Deputy Chaney Brown.

Where the daughter immediately replied, "Umm, I don't need it back, you go ahead and keep it."

That probably would have been a more effective strategy 45 years or so ago, rather than just sticking it to those damn pot-smoking hippies. Thanks, Nixon.

Just legalize it. We already shovel buckets full of amphetamines (including actual meth) at anyone who claims to have ADD. What possible purpose can it serve to keep it away from people who are willing to drink their own piss to get more of it?

Apparently extracting meth from urine really is a thing.

http://www.vice.com/read/tinkle-tweaking-v18n6

Personally, while generally in favor of recycling and all, there may be such a thing as taking it too far.

FWIW, I first heard of drinking a drug-user's urine to get high in my college Botany class a million years ago, however in class we learned about filtering mushrooms through kidneys for a mellower high.

" In eastern Siberia, the shaman would take the mushrooms, and others would drink his urine. This urine, still containing psychoactive elements, may be more potent than the A. muscaria mushrooms with fewer negative effects such as sweating and twitching, suggesting that the initial user may act as a screening filter for other components in the mushroom."

While I am almost sure this isn't the case how can the test determine that there is 'meth' in her urine.  The test looks for one chemical that is present in one of the ingredients of meth.  For all the cop knows she was taking cold medication.  On that standard of evidence they could have arrested jehovas witness protection on his way out of the drug store.  In other words even if her PD is asleep she's going to walk so why waste her time and the taxpayers money?

The difficulty lies in the fact that the woman has kids who will likely put into the foster care system unless a local relative steps up (which is tragically rare in meth cases). The kids end up bouncing around the foster system, switching schools annually, going back to live with mom until she gets arrested again, etc. 10 years later the kids have dropped out of school, are unemployable, have kids out of wedlock, and are doing smash and grabs to pay for meth and heroin. Right back to where we started.

So it's a triple play- you bring in the legislative branch. Still has nothing to do with an officer who apparently managed to use his training appropriately without hurting anyone. Hell, he may have saved her life in the butterflies and rainbows way you prefer life to be if she gets the right help.

Egoy3k: For all the cop knows she was taking cold medication.

Users, Bown added, can then "extract the Methamphetamine from the urine or give it to someone who knows how to do this in exchange for more Methamphetamine."

Think about that, the next time you Farkers do meth.  It may have been distilled from some other meth-head's urine.

Have Google and/or the Net Police become much more active?

I think it used to be that with a search such as https://www.google.com/search?q=extract+Methamphetamine+urine I could find detailed recipes of how to accomplish this. In looking through the results returned now I can't find any that mention what chemicals might be involved other than something called "solvents".

I'm really not interested in doing this, just want to know how dangerous a urine hoarder might be in terms of other chemicals that might be present.

Is it illegal to posses or distribute information on how to manufacture illegal drugs?
This surely doesn't seem true for marijuana or derivatives.

geez, all i wanted to do was find a .gif of cops tasting some drugs from a drug bust (scene from a movie or something) so I could make a snarky 'field test' joke about him tasting the piss.  but after looking at all the things i typed into the search bar i'd guess im on some Agency's list now.  the results were laughably no where near what i typed.

gif searches are the worst.

Because if there is one lesson we can take from the war on pot, it's that if we just try harder and devote more resources, eventually prohibition will work and we'll get rid of the drug in question.
