I'm guessing that if SCOTUS actually heard this case, they would decide against the Satanists because, well, they're not Christian.

It was a stupid decision, and it ends up being very bad for the "Christians" who fought for it. I hope the Satanists make it to the Supreme Court, but I doubt they will be heard.

The Supreme Court ruled a long time ago that the Religious Freedom Restoration Act does not preempt state law. It was intended to, but the Court said Congress exceeded its authority. So this is a frivolous attention whoring case. (As opposed to a non-frivolous attention whoring case, which is what it would be without the Flores precedent.)

Of course they are. Satan is a construct of the Judeo-Christian mythology.

The article don't say anything about filing a lawsuit.  It just says that women who go in for an abortion should give the abortionist a form letter asserting her right to worship the devil.  I'm not sure what that is supposed to accomplish.  How does an abortionist threaten a woman's right to devil worship?

2014-07-28 01:15:28 PM
Don't they want the women to have the babies so they can sacrifice them?

That's not how you spell "doctor."

LOL, this is what I got when I tried to copy/paste the image directly...

I was going to say that this girl looks INFINITELY more attractive doing the tongue thing than Miley Cyrus has ever achieved, but that kinda made me laugh.

As for TFA: I hope it works for them. If you had asked me 10 years ago if I'd be cheering the Satanic Church, I'd have looked at you like you were high. Now, these kids playing 'church' are far more intelligent than their mainstream counterparts.

While I'm pretty sure it will be defaced or destroyed the instant it is installed, I'm still eagerly awaiting all of the legalistic nonsense to be processed and for that statue to be installed.

Has anyone ever looked up the rules of Satanism? Because they're awesome and practical. I'd post the link but Farking on mobile is a wonky pain in the ass.

Do not give opinions or advice unless you are asked.

Do not tell your troubles to others unless you are sure they want to hear them.
When in another's lair, show him respect or else do not go there.

If a guest in your lair annoys you, treat him cruelly and without mercy.

Do not make sexual advances unless you are given the mating signal.

Do not take that which does not belong to you unless it is a burden to the other person and he cries out to be relieved.

Acknowledge the power of magic if you have employed it successfully to obtain your desires. If you deny the power of magic after having called upon it with success, you will lose all you have obtained.

Do not complain about anything to which you need not subject yourself.

Do not harm little children.

Do not kill non-human animals unless you are attacked or for your food.

When walking in open territory, bother no one. If someone bothers you, ask him to stop. If he does not stop, destroy him.

b0rg9: Don't they want the women to have the babies so they can sacrifice them?

No, it's more efficient this way. Just have the doctor perform the sacrificial rite during the abortion. It's like a two for one deal!

I knew some Satanists when I was living in Ohio.  They were some of the nicest people I've ever known--much nicer than my parents' "Christian" friends.

In my experience, Satanist = "live and let live;" Christian = "If you don't believe what I believe YOU'RE GONNA BURN IN HELL!"

FTA: The letter reads that "[a]ll women who share our deeply held belief that their personal choices should be made with access to the best available information, undiluted by biased or false information, are free to seek protection with this exemption whether they are members of the Satanic Temple or not."

I like this. You don't have to pledge allegiance to the dark lord to enjoy his protections.

Missed a line break, there. Tell your troubles and when in another's lair should be separate.

Please tell us how worshiping Christ forces you not to buy insurance that then allows for contraception?

This should be funny.

So there will have to be a handful of attention whoring cases in the states that have both state RFRAs and "informed consent" laws (e.g., Virginia), with the caveat that  Hobby Lobby is persuasive but not mandatory authority with respect to state laws. I'm wondering whether the women have standing, though; it seems to me that it should be a Satanist doctor challenging the law.

It's all good, but the use of "lair" is a titsch ostentatious, considering the church's founding in 1966.

Like George Takei asked, would the far right still say the Hobby Lobby decision was a triumph if Hobby Lobby was run by ultraconservative Muslims?

The separation of Church and State was designed specifically to stop this sort of bullshiat.

upload.wikimedia.org

"Where the preamble declares, that coercion is a departure from the plan of the holy author of our religion, an amendment was proposed by inserting "Jesus Christ," so that it would read "A departure from the plan of Jesus Christ, the holy author of our religion;" the insertion was rejected by the great majority, in proof that they meant to comprehend, within the mantle of its protection, the Jew and the Gentile, the Christian and Mohammedan [sic], the Hindoo [sic] and Infidel of every denomination."

That's a creative use of the law.  It will be interesting to see if it works.  It reminds me of that scene in Spawn where the clown is complaining that all of satan's followers are idiots,  Apparently these followers missed the memo.  I prefer Khorne myself- BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!

LaVey later affirmed the connection with Rand's ideas by stating that LaVeyan Satanism was "just Ayn Rand's philosophy, with ceremony and ritual added".[29]

It doesn't.  I am trying to figure the logic of the devil worshiper.  Are they claiming that the devil wants women to have abortions and that informed consent laws interfere with the work of the devil?
