Anyone looking for a good book about the lead-up to the war, I recommend "The War that Ended Peace"

Also "The Great War" documentary series by the BBC is a great one to watch, each episode spans a different aspect of the war and covers everything.

He couldn't do that because of the Vaginot Line.

Not to excuse Willie, but Moltke sold him a bit of a bill of goods, iirc.

Word War One?  Is that the one where the Koreans scalped Custer?

Americans don't care, even though the USA benefited immensely from participating in WWI.  The USA got rich off WWI and was propelled into world power status.  For everybody else concerned, WWI was not so good.

Yes, it does, and since this article is about Austro-Hungary invading Serbia I think the whole thing needs to be torn down and started again from scratch.

In paintings and photographs, Wilhelm II always hid his left arm, because a childhood disease stunted its growth and it ended up shorter than his right arm by about 6 inches. The fact that even the usually erudite Simpsons writers didn't know about this suggests that his subterfuge was successful.

Everyone knew it was inevitable so they figured they'd just get it over with. Well until they realized the true horror of military industrialization and the whole idea of honorable war went to shiat, but by then everyone was stuck in.

Let's not let revisionist history forget where the REAL blame exists for the start of WWI:   Moritz Schiller The farker that ran the Delicatessen in Appel Quay.  Without the extreme deliciousness of his sandwiches, Gavril Pincip would have been one more failed assassin  and WWI would have needed another causis belli

Also interesting to note that, if in 1913 a stray asteroid had wiped out downtown Vienna, not only would it have killed Archduke Ferdinand, and possibly averted WWI, but it would have taken Hitler, Stalin, Tito, Trotsky and Sigmund Freud with it

Actually, (and technically) it wasn't Kaiser Wilhelm who started the war, it was Franz Joseph the monarch of the Austro-Hungarian empire who started it. This after his nephew Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in Sarajevo. He ordered his troops to invade and declared war on Serbia in reprisal on July 28.

The Russians had a defense pact with the Serbs and announced they were declaring war on Austro-Hungary on July 31.

Germany didn't enter the war until the next day, August 1, which they did so in grand style by declaring war on Russia.  They follow up by declaring war on France by August 3 and Belgium on August 4.

Franz Joseph was a little slow as it took him until August 6 to get around to declaring war on Russia.
