(Daily Mail)   The only reason that tens of thousands of UK residents haven't declared bankruptcy yet is that so few of them can still afford the £525 bankruptcy filing fee   (dailymail.co.uk) divider line 23

A filing fee to go broke? Doesn't that defeat the purpose?

Thanks to Bush-boy the BK fee in the US went to $1500 overnight. Who the hell can afford that?

It was raised to prevent the almost-poors from using bankruptcy as a "convenience".  Because apparently there were a lot of folks who just tank their credit for 10 years, potentially make themselves ineligible for certain jobs, unable to pass certain background/character and fitness reviews, etc., out of convenience.

Take out a payday loan for the £525 and then dd the payday loan the list of obligations on the bankruptcy petition.  DONE

Thank Biden and his bankruptcy law. He is a whore to the banks and CC companies.

On today's episode of "how to spot an idiot" I present Nemo's Brother...

Yes folks, Biden wrote and passed the bill all by himself, in 2005's Republican controlled congress. It's a FACT!

I forgot. Democrats, whether in Congress or in the Oval Office, are never responsible for their actions as long as there is a single Republican around. Ever.

Like I said: "How to spot an idiot" succinctly demonstrated.

Republican written bill. Republican majority. IT'S BIDEN'S FAULT! WHY WON'T LIBS ADMIT THAT!

The funny thing is, it became much easier to walk away from a home loan than declare bankruptcy.

Only six years in the UK. But I agree with your point.

Although some people are dumb, and needed to get pointed towards debt charities way earlier....

This is 100% correct.  I know people who filed for bankruptcy and the final thing they did was max out credit cards to pay down debt that couldn't be discharged in bankruptcy (some student loan payments) and then used the cash advance from the credit card to pay the court filing fees.

No. Quite the contrary. It accelerates it.

This is fraud. Nothing is exempt within 90 days of BK I believe (maybe it's different in the UK).

I agree, but I've seen a few people get away with it.  If there was a waiting period it was probably as simple as just ignoring the credit card bills for a few months.

Which state did Joe Biden represent in the Senate again?
Where are most CC companies domiciled again?

Like most legislation, it was written by the industry itself and the lobbyists made sure the right contributions went the right places so it would pass without an actual congressperson reading so much as the title of the bill, but you can rest assured that Joe Biden was taking good care of his constituency while a Delaware senator.

Most of the credit card companies use South Dakota law for their contracts.  Years ago SD wanted Citi to relocate some operations there and let them re-write their usury laws to their liking. Delaware is a haven for corporations, SD a haven for lenders.
