8.5 billion...trees?

Seems wasteful, though I guess they're Chinese trees.

I like shopping at Family Dollar Tree.

/I don't have to dress up like I'm going to Walmart.

Love to see the register tape on that one.

Don't stop there. I want Family Tree Dollar General Freds.

Oh great.  The market for knockoff cleaning supplies and third-world reject personal care products is booming.
Yay.

Thank God.

That's one less pitch meeting I have to set up for Trailer Sheen! (patent pending)

How about General Fred's Family Tree for a Dollar?

What, they think money just grows on trees?

Why would they do that? They recently opened a bunch of Family Dollar stores in my area and it's just a bunch or random Chinese crap that's not any cheaper than elsewhere. At least at Dollar Tree you know your random Chinese crap will be a dollar or less.

(less not fewer)

their new Motto:

Dollar Tree and Family Dollar: THE place to buy everything a former middle class 'murican could want because we crony capitalists love our cheap overseas communist labor.

no, it 'grows' on wall street and the stockholders/wealthy gobble it up for Free!!   the rest of you schmucks are poorer for it too.

Dollar Tree isn't "Everything's a Dollar" any more. My guess is they are trying to get into Dollar General territory, placing stores in neighborhoods under served by grocery stores.  They undercut the convenience stores but don't have to compete with Wal Mart.

Eventually there is going to be a dollartree-ish store where everything is $5.

I still have not thought up a good domain name to squat on for it yet.

/Still remember calling Woolworth's the "5 and 10" as a kid, even though there was little there that sold for a nickle or a dime even then.
//then again, I also remember when McDonalds had an actual number of 'burgers sold' on their signs instead of 'Billions and billions"

Our dollar store is next door to Wal-Mart, and it does actually have things for a dollar. Not very good things, but I go there sometimes so I don't have to deal with Wal-mart, which has the same stuff for the same price, or close to it.

And those Dollar stores where things are not a dollar suck. They are popping up all over around here where the town is not big enough to support a larger store. They are not cheap, they have the worst crap, and I won't go in them if there's any alternative at all.

They place them within walking distance of the people who cannot afford to drive to Walmart (or cannot afford a car) once a week to load up on groceries and supplies.

Walmart is suffering badly, firing their CEO last week isn't going to change a thing.

Don't buy your family trees at Dollar Family Tree. Their work is shoddy and defective and full of many eggregious errors. One of the family trees I bought was just a list of the men of the Seventh Fleet with your Mother under them.

Family Dollar was doing very, very badly under their management. All other folks in that area are making tons of money. Family dollar was barely getting by.

"Dollar General" and "Family Dollar" have always been mixed up in my mind. You'd think back in the day someone would have blinked and created a different name, like "Shiat on a Shelf."

2014-07-28 02:20:18 PM
"Family Dollar" sucks ass. It's not cheaper than anywhere else, and their selection sucks.

"Dollar General" is more like an old "five-and-dime", which is okay, but they have LOTS of stuff that is more than a dollar. I would say most things there are more than a dollar.

I like "Dollar Tree".  Everything really *is* a dollar, and they have a good selection. I mean, it's junk, but it's *useful* junk that you only paid a dollar for.

And I actually like some of their snacks. They have these fig bars that are delicious, and some off-brand Mexican spiced nuts that are pretty great, too.

Ah, I was looking at their canned food selection, and wondering why it was so expensive. So I guess they mark stuff up to 1 dollar.

This. and Honestly, some of the stuff is actually a pretty good deal. They have full mops for $1 - Even the handle for the things would be more expensive. Not to mention cleaning chemicals that would be several dollars elsewhere..

I go to Dollar Tree to ask how much their items are.

And when they say "Everything is one dollar" do you shout "SOLD!", hand them a dollar, and walk off with everything?

I never go to Family Dollar or Dollar General because they lack the purity of Dollar Tree. Actually the only time I go is when I need balloons, cards or party decorations - but I like knowing that the cheap sh*t I am buying is price-restricted closer to it's actual value.

2014-07-28 05:43:54 PM
Place is a total rip off. Why?

Well, I went to the shoe store, got some shoes on sale, 20% of!

Next, I went to the hardware store, got hardware on sale 30% off!

Then, I went to the dollar store, got no dollars on sale. Cheap bastages.

I...I...honestly, I never thought as many people put as much thought into ranking dollar stores as I do. Or that our results would be exactly alike.

Never eat food from a dollar store, but anything nonconsumable is fair game.

100% true: Upon hearing the news this AM, knew about and could mentally locate Family Dollar and Dollar General stores I have passed in my local travels. Could not place a Dollar Tree. Until I went to the BBQ joint for dinner that I go to all the time -- which is next to the Publix I go to all the time -- next to the bank I go to all the time -- and there was a Dollar Tree right smack next door.

Upshot: I do not think this deal solves anyone's problems. That and BBQ zones me out.

Went to look up Five Below. (I'm a cheap SOB always on the lookout for a bargain). It was founded by a couple of guys who already have two failed retail chains under their belt.

I think they have a good concept - it's hard to explain, but I guess you could compare it to Old Navy when they first debuted - basically, they took the shame away of shopping for cheap shiat.
