Impossible! Britain is nowhere near the Mediterranean, or pizza.

Anchovies mean never ending up with only a single slice of a pizza you ordered and paid for, for yourself.

/I don't "love" anchovies, but I don't mind them.  Fark moochers.

As a Yankee, it wasn't until adulthood that I found it was pronounced "woostershire" sauce instead of "worchestershisterchestershire" the way Bugs Bunny said it.

You have to rinse them well and bake the living hell out of them. Then pick them off the pizza and throw them away.

I've had squid ink, raw eggs, and some other weird stuff as pizza toppings. By far the grossest is the anchovy.

The key is to buy them in the can, and add them to the pizza after it's baked. A little oregano or basil sprinkled on them is good too.

I've never had anchovies on pizza before, but I hate when they DON'T put it into the caesar salad dressing.  Talk about disappointing.  /Mayo is not a valid salad dressing.

sure it is the warming UK waters that are enabling anchovies to live there, but why there are lots of them is that their predators have mostly been wiped out.

that is unless you ignore the history and tradition of Pizza, such as Frank Pepe who was in part responsible for introducing pizza in the US in 1925.

They baked their pizzas offering two types, tomatoes with grated cheese, garlic, oregano and olive oil and the other with anchovy.

yup -- also if you are making the pizza at home they are awesome baked into the crust.

Anchovies are delicious.

Achovy is one of the oldest, most traditional toppings for pizza, especially in Sicily. Also check out pizza's cousin from Nice (which, incidentally, is almost as Italian as it is French...), pissaladière.

So if you don't like anchovies, fair enough. Tastes differ. But thinking that anchovies are some novelty topping or Americanization or debasement of the "traditional" dish is just plain silly. Italians have been putting anchovies on pizza for as long as they have been making pizza.

/Anchovy is the bacon of the sea.

It's not "the first time in 40 years", it's "in this one fisherman's 40 years of experience there hasn't ever been anything like it."

Now onto the pizza debate. I love a good seafood pizza, and eat almost anything from the sea, but for some reason I just don't like anchovies. Perhaps I had a bad experience with an American pizza place, but it didn't taste like fish, it tasted like strips of salt. It was so strong even with the anchovies peeled away the base underneath was still almost inedible.

Almost, I'm not a monster. Pizza is pizza.

This.

Anchovies are really more of a flavoring agent for pizza. If some anchovy paste was mixed in with the sauce, most peoe would love it.

Anchovy filets simmered in butter with a few sliced cherry tomatoes and fresh herbs makes a good sauce for linguine.

I like them on pizza, but people need to learn to wash them off before adding them so it's not like biting into a heap of salt.

What kind of pizza is Detroit style? Is that a pizza left abandoned on the side of the road and city services won't come to dispose of it?

I agree; the "creamy caesar " dressing is crap.  The problem with canned anchovies is the cheap oil used.  Take them out of the can and line them up individually on doubled paper towels.Squeeze them and then roll the towels up and squeeze the hell out of them.  Use a good olive oil in your dressing.

Mm, fresh anchovies!  Still, I have to wonder just how much of the population increase is actually due to fishing limits on anchovies, sardines and their associated predators.

2014-07-28 08:45:33 PM
Last pizza I had with anchovies had rotten fish on top, I guess they just let them spoil since they didn't have enough call for them.  Anyway I ended up with a complete blast from both ends and ever since then I cannot eat anchovies even though I loved them.  I miss anchovies, but I cannot eat them now.
