They ought to be thanking him. And the front office. And Steinbrenner's lowered desire to meddle as he got older. And...

He could have thanked Steinbrenner for letting his crazy vendetta against Dave Winfield get him banished from baseball temporarily, so The Boss wasn't around to trade off Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, and all the other key components of that late 90's-early 2000's dynasty for past-their-prime sluggers and pitchers whose arms are already shot to hell.

Guess who won't be at the next old-timers game.

All snark aside, Torre does have reason to be grateful to Steinbrenner. The job offers (managerial) weren't exactly pouring in for Torre, and when Steinbrenner took a chance on him after firing Showalter, everyone thought George finally went senile.

Steinbrenner must be crushed... oh hang on guys, turns out he's dead.

Knowing Joe, he probably felt bad enough and called the Steinbrenner family to apologize, after all its kind of hard to forget you won 4 world series rings - unscripted yes; what an asshole to forget the man who gave you that chance to manage.

/Torre should of been thanking Don Zimmer; Willie Randolph, Mel Stottlemyer and Chris Chambliss.

Torre, an asshole? Really?

He did thank all four of them. And he did apologize for leaving off mention of Steinbrenner.

Want to try again?

And he did mention that Steinbrenner personally offered him the job and said 'let's face it, i'm because of the Yankees'.

He should send a gift basket

Poor Steinbrenner.  No one would kiss his ass when he was alive, and it continues in death.

This doesn't get enough attention.  Steinbrenner got to reap the rewards of the men who actually fixed his messes while he was banned:

Principal Clarinet: Gene Michael

and Joe Malloy.  They're the ones that invested in the farm system, who upgraded the scouting staff, and who were responsible for Jeter, Rivera, Posada, and Petite.

I caught Torre's speech and the end of Frank Thomas's. Thomas read out a whole laundry list of his former teammates, apologizing if he went over his time, of which he said he only was given 10 minutes. But Torre was allowed to go on for 28 minutes.

Probably doesn't hurt that Torre is the second highest ranking executive in MLB after Selig.

He didn't write a speech? Then what the hell was he reading from?

Glavine went for 17 and Thomas 18. They tell you to try to keep it around 8 minutes, but they don't strictly enforce it like the Oscars.
