Maybe if these people were intelligent enough not to enlist to begin with we wouldn't need skynet to teach them how to act.

Jesus. farking. Christ. Jingoism, and absolute devotion to corporate governance will ruin this country.

But... But it's a vet! They defend our freedoms!

Riiiiight. Just like real vets, men that were drafted like my father to serve in Vietnam, they're defending America. Right.

Replace all the people with machines to save money.

Bemoan the fate of society when everyone's glued to a smart phone.

Huge, huge swaths of people enlist because it's the only way they can pay for college, or just far and away the best paying job they can get.

We're only technically a volunteer military. The enlisted are overwhelmingly poor folks with few other options for becoming less poor. Yeah, there's a decent number of jingoistic redneck assholes who sign up to shoot brown people, but there's also a helluva lot of people who just want to feed their kids.

Coming home from a war zone is an absolute psychological shiatshow, and mental healthcare in this country is abysmal across the board. Anything that helps is fine in my book.

Yep. Plus, how many jobs have healthcare with no or very little out-of-pocket costs? If my kids gets sick, I go to the doctor. It doesn't cost me a penny. Then, they pay you a housing allowance based on where you live. Then, on top of that, how many jobs let you retire after only 20 years and keep half your pay for the rest of your life? Sure, there are some really bad aspects to the job but the benefits are outstanding.
