I've read enough fark threads to know how to fix this. The solution is to heap shame on the firefighters by calling them names, accusing them of weakness of will, and downplaying all factors that don't imply moral inferiority. And I know I'm right because I've lost fifty pounds.

Plug all access points with their girthy bodies and the fires should extinguish themselves.

Most firefighters in the US are volunteers doing it in their spare time without pay, and are barely funded well enough to have operational equipment, much less to buy and maintain gym equipment or memberships.

Basically, anyone bothered by this is welcome to either volunteer themselves, or to lobby for what in most places is a pretty substantial increase in municipal or county taxes to make firefighters paid full-time employees on whom such fitness standards could be reasonably imposed.

You get what you pay for, man.  If you're going to cut extreme corners on cost you get to deal with the inevitable result of supplying yourself out of the Goodwill dumpster of human resources.

I was going to say all the fat firefighters I've seen have always been on the volunteer squads

2014-07-28 10:52:30 AM
Well, then, I have to ask: Except for some rural "bubba" volunteer fire departments, why have I never seen a firefighter who isn't in pretty darn good shape? I've never seen an obese firefighter. They have to take PT exams twice per year.

Is this a problem where you live?

I agree, we shouldn't be mean to the fat firemen. You don't need to fit into small places or not lose your breath if you're fighting fires and saving lives. We should give them all a pat on the back and a free meal at the local paunch burger for their hard work and dedication to becoming spherical.

The military is having the same problem. I'm surprised the defense department hasn't stepped in and started controlling both breakfast and lunch in public school and mandating 5 days a week bootcamp like PE.

"More than 34 million meals are served daily under the national school lunch program, a program intended to improve nutrition for America's children.

But did you know that when the program was created 64 years ago, its primary goal was related to national security?
Jamie Stang, an associate professor of epidemiology at the University of Minnesota, has more.

"In 1946 the National School Lunch program was started. And it was started actually in response to the fact that about one in six recruits for World War II had some level of malnutrition or under-nutrition," Stang says. "And the Department of Defense decided that they needed to make sure that we had a healthy population that could support and defend our country.""

Sooo... where are all the people who protest that women firefighters have to be able to meet the physical standards of men? Either they need to be on the front lines shouting about this too, or stepping aside because standards just got a whole lot easier.

Most places that have volunteers are having trouble staffing. It's a shame that in this litigious and on demand society there are fewer and fewer people that will put other's safety above their own.

We should not be shaming them, it is they that should be shaming us.

Did you not see all the outrage when Michelle Obama promoted healthy school lunch standards?  Imagine how much more there would be (and from all sides) if the military came in to schools to mandate health.

A fascinating hypothesis by a prominent physician/scientist.

That has yet to be proven to contribute to today's obesity epidemic.

/Influence of HFCS probably dwarfs this, and Dr. Blaser would probably admit this

They're skinny and in shape.

I would imagine it's a similar situation to the NFL... Depends on how they define overweight and obese. If they're just using BMI, it's a shiatty study.

Maybe. On the other hand they're not elected officials and I could very much see some retired 5 star general not giving a shiat about taking some heat for making the fatties run.

No, let'd not do that. In fact, let'd not do anything, those precious flowers will cry and eat even more. No, let's not make them responsible for their actions, it is society's fault! See, our culture of fat shaming is at fault, those tender firefighters cannot take it.
