Well, it has two rather distinct plotline that are sequential rather than parallel. And generally more plot than the first two combined.

Harry Potter should have started splitting them starting with 4. Tons of stuff was missed.

You can't possibly be serious. Harry Potter took an incredibly boring and drawn out book and made it into two incredibly boring and drawn out movies. The only really good book and movie from that franchise was #3...the rest were mediocre to okay.

The problem with the Harry Potter movies is that they start out as a nice kid's movie and then get very dark very fast. I wouldn't mind showing my kids the first movie or two, but then they will want to see the rest. My youngest is already freaked out about death.

So are they recasting Philip Seymour Hoffman's role or just cutting it? Never read the books but the last movie made him seem like he is integral to the upcoming story.

The last book is really long.  I don't know how they would do it in one movie without cutting a bunch of stuff or just simplifying it.

Of course based on the book I predict this movie won't be so good.  The last book is not as good as the previous two, although it picks up in the second half.  Perhaps the movies will make the last book better.

They had most scenes for both parts filmed before he passed away.  They may need some tweaking towards the end of Mockingjay Pt 2, but Pt 1 scenes were all in the can before he died.

Honestly, they could pretty easily vastly simplify the last book, and not really miss anything. There are 2-3 deaths which are super critical, and the entire 'invade' portion. The rest could be covered very quickly, probably focusing for the longest time portion on why there's another district and why it's left alone to do what it's going to do.  Once you get that established, invade, and the main characters head out, do the deeds, kill some people, and close on catnip being happy. Probably doable well under the 2 hour mark.

Now, if you want to actually show all of the dumb shiat the author tried to write at but wasn't really skilled enough to pull off, then ya, 2 movies of 1-2 hours makes sense.

And since presumably they'll have some actual writers working on these scripts, they'll probably make more sense as something besides 'SO I AM WRITING THIS AND WANTED THIS PLOTLINE SO HERE ARE THE PIECES BUT SCREW SUBTLE'.

Yah I get what you're saying, but I'm not a fan of when Hollywood tries to take an epic story and cram it into 90 minutes.  It's never good.  A Peter Jackson length movie might have been fine for the last book.

Really, I'm only looking forward to the second half.  I hope it's done right.  Of course I felt like that part could have been a lot longer in the book instead of the stupid first part.  The first half felt like Katniss was sitting around whining and being depressed while everyone tried to use her for their own agenda and I guess not much happens in retrospect.  It just felt super long because it was boring.

Serious question. Is Natalie Dormer's smirk a real tic or something? Or something she practiced? Either way, awesome and probably landed her tons of gigs she wouldn't have gotten otherwise.

The second movie will be mostly comprised of Katniss hiding in a closet, strung out on morphine and having PTSD flashbacks, so to stay true to the book.

I'm so hard for this movie.

And not for the stereotypical FARK or sci-fi nerd reasons. Having a "strong female lead" or some other sociological claim is bullshiat.

I find the author's writing deceptively clever in its youth-oriented simplicity.  And the movies caught lightning in a bottle with the casting, tone, theme, and judicious use of CGI.

Yes, the overarching theme of rebelling against an authoritarian ruling class is timeless (hence the the love of Firefly), but the execution of the efforts of the director and visual artists are nearly perfect.

Yes, because we needed more Half Blood Prince..... and Deathly Hallows pt. 1 was so fantastic.  No thank you.

While Order probably could have used two movies, a split would have likely ruined the nearly perfect execution they pulled off.

Yah but the last book doesn't have anything to do with the games.

Also, Hunger Games isn't going for the gory comedy angle.  Look, I enjoyed Battle Royale for what it was, but I found it to be more humorous than "thrilling" or "frightening" or whatever else it was supposed to be.  Sure it was a little disturbing like in typical Japanese fashion, but I couldn't help but laugh during many of the death scenes (like it typical Japanese fashion).

It doesn't in any way hide away about the harsh realities of the situation. Katniss and Haymitch are both damaged by the experience. This isn't Harry Potter where he watches Cedric Diggary get killed or melts a teacher's face or whatever and 5 minutes later is joking around with Ron or Dumbledore. And that's quite refreshing in a film aimed at older kids.
