Awesome...

He'd released the hammer to grab my nuts and now I had hold of it. I whacked him three to five times with the hammer in the chest and maybe the face.

Rookie mistake

See? Your mistake there was that you didn't immediately stomp his brains out or cave his skull in with that hammer. Why wrestle around with the prick? farking nutbag fundie. And a good response to "The lord sent me" would have been right before you stomped his head in would be "Ok, np, Ill just send you back to him".

So the family just watched, and no one thought to call 911? And then they just told the guy to leave, so he could go terrorize someone else?  The guy clearly has mental issues and shouldn't be on the street; they didn't do him a favor by letting him go.

Yeah, we just send a runner for Trev, the constable. He's over in Hokitika at the moment investigating the theft of some carrots from Mrs Jones' vegetable patch, but since there's only fifteen people in the entire country, the case shouldn't take too long to crack.

/for the record, the emergency number in NZ is 111 - it was set up back in the days of rotary dial telephones, so it was the quickest number to dial

This right here is the guy I want in my local police department. No god-complex wannabee, just an honest bad ass who probably thinks the casual application of deadly force is for pussies who can't take a punch or two.

That's a pretty cavalier attitude about the carrots. They might not mean much to you but I'm sure that Mrs. Jones was quite looking forward to a nice salad or maybe some soup.

Surpheon: just an honest bad ass who probably thinks the casual application of deadly force is for pussies who can't take a punch or two.

The problem with that is that being struck in the head with a fist, and especially a hammer, is deadly force. Any one of those blows could have killed him. Not saying you should get to shoot anyone who ever throws a punch at you, but it's definitely not a harmless situation. People really do die from fist fights and other blunt force trauma, it's not like television.

Not if you're a big dicked, non-gun owning, unpussy! Then you just laugh off hammer blows without worry for the safety of your wife and kids. Quit living life like a fearful sissy girl.

And people do die from boxing too. I agree that this was certainly a case of a guy being assaulted with potentially deadly force, but from the sound of it he was not lucky but rather a pretty tough guy who could hold his own. Often times excessive force has to be applied by someone who is too weak to subdue an opponent any other way - you don't see many adults having to go for a choke hold or knife when rough housing with their 5 year old nephews gets a bit out of hand. This guy applied the force necessary and no more - even after almost having his nuts ripped off by a crazy guy who attacked him in his own home while his wife and kids were home, he only applied the force necessary to get him out of the house. That's the sort of person I want having a badge, gun, and taser around me. I don't live in a warzone, I want my police to be more bouncer and less soldier please.

Did the story about the psychiatrist who shot his patient at Mercy Hospital get linked up? The patient had just killed someone else and looked ready to run up the score. It was honestly the first story I'd ever heard where a bystander (sorta - initial reports suggest the dr and patient had some history) with a concealed carry permit who wasn't ex-police or military actually was actually useful.

I'd bet you that ex-millitary and cops are just statistically more likely to have CCW permits than the average bear.

Advocating for common sense gun laws is not a sign of a pacifist let alone an 'extreme pacifist'. Besides which what the fark are you talking about gun control (a mostly american debate) in a thread about a hammer attack in New Zealand?  It seems to me that the only one with an agenda here is you.

for me too.  I cannot stress this enough to any would be intruders out there.  Bone pulp and organ jelly is all that would be left if you hurt my nuts.  My 5 year old accidentally elbowed my groin this weekend and as the red haze of groin related nuke everything mode descended across my vision, I remember it was an effort of will to realize that I could not kill this particular offender for his transgression.

In my mind, the hero tag here is earned not by his successful home defense, but rather his restraint.  He was a great deal more cerebral in that situation than I think I could have been.  Good man.

So after the MMA battle that takes place over two floors they get to the door and it's all "Well, jolly good fisticuffs and srapping, 'ole chap. Righty-ho, off you go now."
I'm thinking it went a little less polite than how that sounds.

Contrary to popular belief, I think this incident is actually a good argument for gun control.

People always seemed to only think the gun is only in the hands of the victim but truth is if NZ has lax gun laws the criminal would've been the one armed with the gun and killed the homeowner (even he he owns a 100 guns) since he was asleep.

As such the invader was only armed with a hammer due to extremely strict gun laws there..thereby giving the homeowner a much greater odds to defend himself.

I'm extremely pro-gun, but I admit that gun control, when attempted, is successful in inverse relation to the size of the island.

I'm extremely pro-gun and I know that mandatory safety training and background checks would help regardless of the size of the island.
