You know what "chick Lego" is? It's called "Lego".

2014-07-27 06:16:10 PM
When Lego markets to women, we have dumb-ass pseudo-feminists claiming that it's sexist. "Legos for girls are called Legos" cites one particularly dimwitted critic.
When some market savvy woman does the same thing -it's "empowering" and "boys should play with girls toys too".

There's a very slight contextual difference between the two events.  Do you know what that is?

I think the notion of making something pink automatically makes it for a female, is absurd. The breast cancer thing, which I support, does not help with this stigma. We are trying to teach a generation to be color blind as it comes to race, but are fine when it comes to gender.

I'm at a loss as to why, aside from specific characters like the LotR sets, they don't just throw in a mishmash of male and female figures? Sure, you're still going the with the gender binary and the women are going to need makeup or something to identify such a tiny figure as female, but it's a pretty straightforward fix.

Daughterbunny loves her some Lego Friends. Sonbunny has, I think, almost every lego set except for the Death Star. And when Sonbunny and I play, we have a lot of fun. It's all about Good vs. Evil, Right vs. Wrong, death, destruction, dead, beat, burnt bodies, and I'm a guy, so I get that and have fun with it. But when Daughterbunny and I play, it's all about relationships and cooperation and compromise and building and growing and helping, and I'm at a disadvantage and somewhat confused. So there's a learning curve for me there. But it's a cool learning curve which requires that we sometimes take breaks and bake cookies or pick flowers. At first, we had to have two Easy Bake ovens (one in pink, the other in grey). But now we're all grown up and using the grown up oven, and sometimes we include some of the herbs from the garden in addition to flowers, and sometimes the good Jedi help build the treehouse, and the pet groomers help take care of the tauntauns. It's all very cool.

The problem is that the behavior of many (but not all) people who characterize themselves as "feminists" is very much at odds with the definition you cite.

I subscribe to humanism which also includes the equality of the sexes. Which begs the question: what is the difference?

The difference is that feminism is not about equality but rather a bizarre victimhood cult that believes that there are no differences between the sexes.

And I'm sure this correlation has absolutely nothing to do with marketing to the sexist parents who then buy the toys for their girls and insist that they play, rather than completely ignoring or chastising the kids' interest in normal legos, other building toys, cars, gun/adventure toys, and the entire color blue.

Subby's Mother: sexist parents

That's the problem. Feminists lament that historically women have been relegated to domestic drudgery and child rearing while men have been aggressors. Here's the rub- if women are raising the kids, where do the 'macho behaviors' come from? If women are so nurturing, gentle and sensitive how come none of this rubs off on their sons?
If it comes down to a nature/nurture duality, then either women were not instilling these values in their sons or it's just in a man's nature to be an aggressive prick. I think it comes down to sensitive, cooperative males not being desirable until recently. Having a tough conqueror as a mate historically meant having more comforts and security. Having sons with these traits meant that they would have desirable mates and security themselves.
Male aggression has only been 'undesirable' for a split second on the evolutionary clock and it may not stay that way for very long.

Exactly. The most important thing about the Friends ghetto (for some little girls, at least) isn't that it is pink and purple, or that it has more cute animals, or that it uses lazy stereotypes; it is that it is built around characters who are female and thus easier to identify with.

Spoilers... Mega Bloks are poor quality, still break easily, and don't have the "will always lock with another brick" ness that every LEGO has. So they may make "cool" sets. But find custom LEGO builders who have made those same sets with their own LEGO, and they will be at least 10 times more awesome, and they will stay together.

I've had the opposite experience with Mega Bloks, being that they have a tendency to stick together too well, and not being able to get them back apart.

The main problem with custom Lego builders is that they, while producing awesome stuff, have to get their pieces through other Lego sets or individual purchase from Lego, which carries a huge markup (afaik).

So the few places I've seen that sell custom military vehicles cost between two and four hundred dollars a set, while the MB set with the ersatz Abrams is $59.99.

They aren't really good.  They just partnered with a bunch of video games.  They made a bunch of Halo shiat not that long ago (probably still making it).  Lego is still superior.  It's down to the quality of their plastic, which is just massively better.

That's true. Some of those custom things are ridiculously overpriced, even for LEGO.

The Ecto-1 is currently only $49 and one of the best sets for the price that they've ever made.

Yeah, the only one I've seen that even looks close is huge. Might even be too big for the old Technic guys the used to make.

But Deloreans are weird cars though. I actually saw one for real a week or so ago, and now I have absolutely no idea how you're supposed to fit two people inside without cutting their legs off.

To be fair, they've been putting stuff like that out for a while now (they even had a Warcraft line). But they still drop the ball horribly IMO since they use so many proprietary pieces that look insanely out of place on anything but what they were designed for.

Plus the cheapness as some have stated is still there.

Ashens' youtube channel has some reviews of cheapo Lego stuff, and some of it is even good. Although the minifigs they come with could star in their own knockoff-Lego version of Freaks with how bloody mutant some of them look...

Nice.

My only thought for that would be that if it did get approved that they use the bronze color from the Ninjago sets instead of the bright yellow for all of it.

I've got a friend that got a bunch of these for her daughter after seeing tons of Jezebel articles about them. She based the kid's entire Christmas around them, assuming that her daughter would love them, "Because they were made by a woman, and who would know what a girl wants better than a woman?" She got really pumped up over them because of Jezebel and The Mary Sue. I guess it was a little troll-y, but I bought the kid one of the $30 Lego Friends sets as a kind of weird experiment. The kid played with the GoldieBlox precisely once, and when she realized that she couldn't really do much more interesting stuff with them than what the instructions said, she ditched them. That Lego Friends set has become one of her favorite toys, though. Her mom resisted, but eventually got her more sets and now the kid is showing me some new intricate creation every time I'm there. It's amazing how good she's gotten with them. Meanwhile, the GoldieBlox sit in their packages in the corner of a closet, untouched since Christmas.

Kids don't give a shiat about your stance on the idea of the patriarchy or how you feel about gender-based marketing. They just want the toy to be fun and interesting. Everything I've seen says GoldieBlox is neither.
