Usually these these things are Eurocentric, but they got it right about Vietnam in the #8 spot.

I find the 92% of the Phillipines suspicious. For them they should factor out the everpresent love-hate feelings they have for America.

anti-Americanism that swept Europe

There's a big difference between "disapprove of George Bush" and "will kidnap and decapitate Americans."  Or between "disapprove of American foreign aid and military policies" and "was just blown up by an American-funded bomb dropped from an American-funded Israeli warplane."

Pakistan and Palestine are affected by American foreign policy. Germany can sit back and pass judgment knowing that nothing important will change.

Most people won't give a shiat anywhere, or may do something as trivial and harmless as joking about you, as long as you aren't a giant farkstick.

There is a significant minority of people in most European countries that do not like people from the U.S.  It doesn't matter if you are respectful, quiet, and deferential to their customs and mores.

They will not like you, so just be yourself and fark em.

Our financial collapse played a part, but it was really Germany trying to force austerity measures down their throats that sent them into a tailspin.

ZAZ: There's a big difference between "disapprove of George Bush"

I was traveling in Dublin shortly after the 2004 election.  I tell you what, the Irish sure as hell weren't timid about telling us what they thought of that guy!  But I never got the feeling that they "hated" me personally, just that they wanted me to explain the mentality of American politics.  We did meet one right wing derper--easily the most unpleasant and ugly person I've ever met.  No one was talking to her, she looked miserable, and I couldn't understand why the hell she was traveling in a foreign nation and expecting everyone to kiss her ass for being an American.

In my various travels, I've found most western Europeans want to know about why Americans want so many guns, or talk about the death penalty, or some current political issue.  I've never had anyone attack me verbally for being an American (then again, I didn't go strolling into any protests).

Fano: The French love us and the Germans hate us and all is right with the world.

The article states that "Europe" loves us 'cause, you know, Obama - Germany, however, hates us, probably for the same reason.

And Germany is the only country over there making any money.  The rest, especially Greece and Spain, are dragging the Euro economy down with their socialism and 26 hour work weeks.

Makes enough sense.

Yeah. And to add to that in the terms of the headline:

There's a big difference between the favorability ranking a populace gives a nation, versus how welcoming they would be to a visitor from that nation.

I notice the 'love' column is mostly Western nations who have a close relationship with the US and also see a lot of tourism dollars from US citizens. The 'hate' column, with two exceptions is mostly countries that have been directly harmed by US policies and/or are nations that have been overrun or are in a civil war incited by muslim extremists and terrorist groups who will kidnap and decapitate 'infidel' Americans because they make a good target. The exceptions are Greece and Germany who 'hate' Americans in the way that they'll complain that "American tourists are always so loud and obnoxious, and they put ketchup on everything." You probably won't be kidnapped and beheaded on video while a goatherding caveman screams religious slogans at you.

The Germans still feel they are a superior race, and they view America as little brother at best. They are indeed rising from the ashes. At some point they may need another beatdown.

Wow, did we take the same tours?

In Asia, if you tried to be polite, those people would fall all over themselves to be great host. It's been 30 years for me, and I still get birthday cards.

Can't say I felt the slightest bit of hate towards myself when I was in Greece a couple years ago. One Greek guy was super weirded out about how I had a Mac laptop ("Is this some sort of American computer?") and another guy laughed at us Californians for electing Schwarzenegger, but nobody was rude to us or anything.

If that was true, I would think a more neutral attitude would be expected rather than the rather aggressive front put towards anyone that doesn't speak their language perfectly. In the overwhelming majority of countries I've traveled through, just the mere attempt to use the local language is enough to break the ice. Not true in France. IMO.

Robo Beat: I must confess that I was quite surprised to see that Vietnam holds the US in such high regard.  What with the history and all.

I've always been amused at how Japan loves the US and idolizes US pop culture given that we dropped the bomb on them twice.

Then again, Germany has also been fond of US pop culture, and though the government has been chilly towards the US over the whole NSA thing I've always had the general impression that US/German relations are pretty good at the citizen level.

Given that countries we've gone to war with in the past have ended up turning out to like us well enough maybe it makes it a little bit more understandable how Bush thought that the Iraqis and Afghanis would turn into our buddies after we 'liberated' them.
