(Chicago Sun-Times)   It's time once again for your updated Weekend Chicago Shooting Tracker, and things were relatively quiet this weekend, with only nineteen people getting shot, though once again a child was the victim of indiscriminate gang violence in Chiraq   (voices.suntimes.com) divider line 84

Chirac is a worm.

This Chicago shooting meme is a good indicator of people who are bad at math, Yes, Chicago has more murders than other cities, but it also has more people. The fairest comparison is the per-capita homicide rate, and if you look at that you see there are 12 US cities with homicide rates higher than Chicago. Statistically, you are far more likely to be killed in New Orleans than in Chicago, but when people thing of New Orleans they think of fun, food, and the lingering odor of stale urine. Of course in New Orleans, as in Chicago, the murdering is largely confined to certain areas, areas that the prudent traveler would be wise to avoid.

I might be a little defensive because I was born and raised in Chicago, but I really don't remember getting shot all that often.

Yeah, we had an article on Fark about that kinda recently. Relative to population, Chicago is pretty average among big American cities. I'm not saying that that's a good thing, because our cities as a whole are too violent, but I don't get the Chicago fixation recently.

Always lovely to see white boys who live in the suburbs and have never really stepped foot into a real city shooting their opinions off about issues that they've never actually experienced in real life but think they know better about because the TV news media tells them to be scared.

It's because Obama is still president right now and he used to live in Chicago. Thus, to the right wing Tea Partiers, anytime a person in Chicago coughs the wrong way, it's an ample opportunity to stick it to the LIBSFASCISTCOMMIENAZISEEKRITMUSLIMFARLEFTLIBTARDFARTBONGO agenda.

Seriously, though. I've been to Chicago numerous times in the pre-Obama presidency era. It was exactly the same back then as it is now. Except that since we have a Chicagoan as president nowadays, it makes for a national news story whenever a violent crime happens.

I am not a conservative by any stretch of the imagination nor do I listen to Rush Limbaugh, sorry.

I happen to think that gun laws are stupid and don't solve the problem they are supposed to solve, so yeah I snark about them. Chicago has (or once had?) the strictest gun laws in the nation and those wonderful gun laws did nothing to stop the murdering.

No. "Hope and change" was political derptitude. One might think that having a black President from their own community might inspire the gangs to uplift themselves and seek a greater calling. Obviously one would be wrong to think that now. Lost opportunity...sad.

Two more words:  Supreme Court.

I might be a little defensive because I was born in raised in Chicago, and I do remember getting shot at during the height of the gun ban days, when only the cops and other criminals had handguns, and UUW was a felony charge.

The "Chiraq" meme is being supported by both the left and the right -- the democrats want to keep Chicago == Gunshot wounds association in people's minds because they can't have people thinking Chicago's bans on firearms and concealed carry being overturned by the courts has resulted in a decrease in crime and shootings.

And COMPSTAT helps massage crime rates to fit the narrative.

Along with this "tracker", (and I know it won't fit the liberal anti-gun agenda), there should be a listing,
if the weapon involved, was LEGAL to possess by the person doing the shooting (if known).
Since Chicago has some of the toughest gun laws, you can bet 90% or more of these shootings are
will ILLEGAL weapons.  Maybe they need some more gun laws in Chicago  HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Based on your posting history, I know that you grew up in the Denver area (which from experience, is so ridiculously white that the most threatening "gang" in the city are farking Juggalos). And now you live in suburban Tennessee. Have you ever even known any black people in your life aside from reading about them in news stories and/or intermittently seeing one in public?

It is going to take more than "b-b-b-but math!" to get rid of the "Murder Capitol of the US" title. Chicago is a big city so it must have lots of gun murders! That why New York City has 3 times as many people and, wait a minute, fewer gun murders and LA has a million more people and, uhm, the same number of gun murders. Yes, being a big city must be it!

Chicago is the next Detroit. Other cities are on the line- probably LA when cities from the East just say fark it I can't afford it anymore. This President has failed on so many levels it makes Carter look like Santa Claus. But if he got one thing right, it should have been violence in America.
