One of the coolest things I ever seed was an abandoned coal car that Conrail parked on a disused rural track in a forest in northern PA. What had happened was that the car was never properly cleaned and there was a thin layer of dirt on the bottom. During the summer, animals and wind carried seeds into that dirt and saplings started growing. By fall, when I found it, there was a bed of moss and trees as high as me growing in it. Climbed down in there. Kinda like your own personal forest in a box.

There is an abandoned railroad near Erwin, TN.  A town in the mountains became a ghost town when the train stopped servicing it.  Some of the old tracks that ran near a river were eventually flooded.  I learned of the place when rafting.  I wanted to hike the tracks into the ghost town, but I was a little spooked about what, and who, I might find when i got there.  I believe the town was finally abandoned in the 1970's.

Also by those tracks is an old mine, from which cool air always blows.  You can feel the breeze when you pass by it on the river.

Pieces of the of a train surface when the river floods, just to be buried again later.

Not only that, he thinks buses are trains.

I'm leaving disappointed.  I was hoping for old steam locomotives instead of a bunch of transit trolleys and a bus.

Those were not trains.

This is a train.

Reality: Some asshole's personal landfill, a near-permanent reminder that this species thinks of the earth as nothing more than a giant dumpster.

Have any more details on this? I might be hiking the AT near Erwin in a couple weeks and my curiosity is piqued.

There's a little passenger train abandoned about a mile away from Superior, IA (NW corner).  It's about five cars on a little bit of track.  It was a dinner train and apparently was abandoned shortly after Christmas as it's still decorated with a Christmas tree and some other holiday stuff.  Meth lab in the galley (or whatever they call the kitchen in a train) was busted a few years ago.  It's easy to get to but the farm next door has peacocks that will chase you.

If you're ever in Dawson City, Yukon Territory, Canada, go and see the old steamboat graveyard.  Take the free ferry across the Yukon river, then hike along the river for about a half mile.  There are seven abandoned paddle-wheel steamers rusting away on the banks of the river.  Mother nature will reclaim them soon, they've been there since the 1950's.

Interesting, I assume you were rafting Nolichucky? Any details where on the river this is? Erwin is pretty near by to me. I'm guessing it's up river from Erwin?

It's fitting that a SEPTA train is among the first pictured in the article... one of my colleagues has put in his two weeks so I was shooting the shiat with him the other day about his new job.

He didn't really have much to say about it except about how tremendously pleased he was that the new position was only 15 mins away from his house and he'd never have to take a SEPTA train here again.

Fark: The trains and busses may be deep in the snowy woods, but the punks found them and broke the windows.
