Well, is that not the root of all our problems?
The amount of oversight and regulation is too damn high!

Just think how nice the airlines could make it if they did not have to waste all that MONEY and energy dealing with the old timey regulations and DOT shenanigans.

Or, we could replace all the Aliens in Meat Suits that somehow are running business from top to bottom.
But, that will have to wait until we win the War on Business and Corporate Personhood.

Large companies are heartless and greedy, and they know they can get away with murder thanks to their elected officials in Congress. Don't worry, the DOT will teach them a lesson by fining them $1,000 for deceiving the public.....aaaaaaand they've already made that back.

Ya know, I had an economics class under Walter Heller back when he was spouting this Capitalism Utopia.
Everything I biatched about that caused me to get kicked out of lecture more than once, has come to pass.
I am so proud, but still Poor.

I hadn't flown in four years until just last week. This explains my very pleasant surprise to find that the fare I paid was actually what was advertised as the price on the website. I just assumed that my $500 flight would actually cost $650 once they added in all the fees they didn't have to include in the advertised price.

They better not roll that rule back.

The problem is that the American system that calls itself capitalism is anything but.  There is almost zero actual competition in our economy.

Capitalism is a good system as long as their is a functioning body that has sensible regulations.

What we are seeing now is the slow destruction of capitalism.

I stopped flying years ago. I hate every minute of every aspect of flying. It is simply the worst. Getting held on the tarmac for hours with no way off, no food, no water, and no chance to use the bathroom was the last straw. I am a damned American, not a hostage.

Now I drive everywhere. I pack as many bags as I like. I don't get molested and photographed like a sex slave. I can eat whatever I want at any restaurant on the road, or bring my own food. I can crank my music and sing along. There is never, nor will there ever be, a crying baby or annoying child in my car. Ever. Costs less, too.

Yeah, yeah. I used to have to fly for my job, too. But I quit.

How about NO. Does NO do it for ya?
Proof positive that when left in the hands of corporations who will do anything they can legally get away with in their quest for profit, life does indeed suck.
Here's a suggestion to the airlines: treat the people who fly with you as customers and not consumers, and maybe they won't sue you all the time.
This works for any business or corporation.

Simple answer is to cut them off the route where the violation occurred for six months. Screw up more than a half dozen times in a year and ground the fleet. Pretty sure they'd sort the problem right quick with that...

There is still plenty of competition. I'm looking at going to Denver later this year and I have a multitude of flight options. Some are cheaper, some have better amenities. Hell, I'm lucky enought to even have a choice of airports!

No. What you are seeing now is thru the Shiney on Cronyism.
Capitalism and Keynesian Economics are just cons for the student body to grow up and be slaves to the 1%.
BTW, there is no "economics" when wealth is as concentrated as it is right now.

Problem is that a lot of routes are served by only one or two airlines when you get beyond the major hubs. Your plan would either cut off flights entirely or hand a monopoly to an airline, who will promise not to abuse this privilege then raise fares by 150%. The simpler way is to require any flight with a significant violation to refund the cost of the tickets/services/fees to all of the passengers with interest. The instant the cost - benefit analysis tips toward obeying the law then they will obey the law and not a second before.

Cash might be pretty hard. Big companies might have lots of money but most of that is in investments and such. Southwest better not screw up as $1B cash would wipe out a quarter of its cash and short term investments. Jet Blue doesn't even have $1B in cash and short term investments. It would certainly make them think twice about screwing up.

Bureaucracies are heartless and greedy. We have competing bureaucracies in industry and government, and they both suck.

"Plenty"????

We are down to a handful of airlines now, and most people have 1 or 2 real choices unless they live near a major hub airport.
