Actually, I need to be sitting down... because after Russia released the black boxes after having them in their custody, I expected to hear something from the flight cockpit voice recorder saying something about the nyborg screwing up their depth perception.

Of course, now, the data recorder will say incoming Ukrainian missle.. incoming Ukrainian missile! Got that... THE Ukraine has launched a missile at this plane.

Apparently, the "black" boxes are pretty tamperproof. And there were only two places in Europe considered secure enough to examine them; they ended up in Farnborough (of the air show fame), and were examined in Faraday cage conditions.

However, FTA:

"It did what it was designed to do," a European air safety official told CBS News, "bring down airplanes."

He probably said "aeroplanes".

/And the last thing, other than MH17, that I heard about Farnborough recently, is the no-show of the F-35. Oh dear.

Pretty vague report. My favorite spin on it is eturbonews, which illustrates the story with a picture of the airlock scene from 2001 and says explosive decompression kills you within a half second or so.

There have been many photos and videos seen of wreckage with obvious shrapnel holes - one most persuasive to me was a piece sitting against a tree in a village. It looked like the lower centre part of the cockpit window frames and part of the nose, with many small holes ripped outwards - as if the missile might have exploded just below the nose of the plane, blowing it apart, and reports say the cockpit area wreckage was found far from the main crash site.

2014-07-26 07:48:26 PM
They're lying,  it's falsified information made to make us Ruskies the bad guys!

That massive explosive decompression could have come from anything,  like the Boerenkoolstamppot that was served for dinner to the passengers.

zerkalo: OK. Now do we have access to the fuselage in order to trace back what kind of explosive was in that missile? Not that that would quiet the truthers...

Most x-to-Air missiles explode before contact and spread shrapnel or other bits of metal that ultimately shred the aircraft. There would be minimal to no explosive residue on the plane although there may be some on the shrapnel, however the shrapnel itself would be unique enough to provide an ID on the missile. It would be more likely to find one of these bits since they would be numerous and spread out, the missile body itself was more than likely found or 'will never be located' (wink wink comrade). It may settle the debate if it was an air-to-air or ground-to-air missile but since the Ukraine and Russia operate similar or the same systems it wouldn't be conclusive on who fired.

I'd a thought they'd hold back on releasing any conclusions until they at least had most of the human remains in the debris field and as much air craft evidence, since Russia was guaranteed to react. But since Russia is shelling from Russia, all pretense is done.

The only thing clouding this as a full act of war is the media consenus and it's black propaganda girlfriend, eating at a McDonald's in downtown Moscow.

1. Why is this a turn of events?

2. Completely different scenario. The US made several efforts to contact that plane before firing on it. Bad accident, caused by a human mistake in both situations.

In both situations, there were individuals not so forthcoming of the events or intentions.  If what I've read is fact, someone with some significant weapons knowledge fired on that airplane, and the
rumors are it was likely Russian, and mistakenly shot down.

In the Iran airlines case, yes, there were communications on military channels, and commercial channels, but none on the air traffic channel.  Someone again screwed up.

I'm saying no one side is better than the other.  Bad human error, and 600 lives lost over two mistakes.

its probably because there was not enough time for a cover up this time due to the wonders of modern communication...  Hell, im willing to bet that the Kremlin learned a lot of it from the media and social media just like our government got more up to date information from CNN during 9/11 than they seemed to be able to compile themselves...

But you already knew that, I'm sure.

I would have thought that flight 007 would have narrowly escaped somehow.

It did, but then they cast George Lazenby as the new pilot and nobody was interested in it anymore.

The people who read the data gave the conclusion but not the data. And the black box is nowhere near the fuel tanks.

If the info is UNRELEASED, then there is no way to verify and confirm reports that a missile hit the tanks.

Also, you hit a plane with a missile in the fuel tanks....plane goes KABOOM....there isn't large plane parts...or black boxes, left. Planes are very lightweight metal, and once compromised, they break apart.

A lot of folks will believe anything....

Soooo....what? Are you saying this plane was actually not shot down? Or that the US did it? What's your farking point? Or are we just digging through history in an attempt to deflect the now?

Not really.

The United States government did not formally apologize to Iran.[11] In 1996, the United States and Iran reached a settlement at the International Court of Justice which included the statement "...the United States recognized the aerial incident of 3 July 1988 as a terrible human tragedy and expressed deep regret over the loss of lives caused by the incident...".[12] As part of the settlement, the United States did not admit legal liability but agreed to pay on an ex gratia basis US$61.8 million, amounting to $213,103.45 per passenger, in compensation to the families of the Iranian victims.

I suspect you're trolling, but just to keep this in the right direction....

That's not how airplanes work.   For one, while airplanes are designed to be light weight, they are also designed to be incredibly robust.  The aircraft manufacturers also started including rip stop doublers http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rip-stop_doubler  after the problems with the DeHaviland Comet.  Basically, airplanes are designed so that even an explosive decompression in an unforseen location won't result in a hull loss.   They also don't shread automatically into a million pieces.   And contrary to what hollywood would have you believe, airplanes don't explode into such a high temperature fireball that everything is vaporized.

The "black boxes" on airplanes are kept way back in the tail of the aircraft, far away from any fuel and likely impact points, they are also designed to survive post crash fires and a fall from altitude. While I woudn't be surprised if a missle could break an airplane in half (you can do lots of things if you just add more high explosives, and you don't need to hit a fuel tank to do it), you'd still see a lot of rather large pieces falling to earth.  Short of a direct impact where the black boxes are located (very unlikely with either radar or heat seeking missles),  you are not all that likely to destroy or significantly damage them.

Because of where the black boxes are located, I wouldn't be surprised if all data ends right at the moment of impact either though.

Finally, the reports aren't that a missle hit the fuel tanks, they are that a missle hit the airplane.   The investigators are the ones that are reporting that to the media and they are the ones that do have the data.   Finally... why would the Russians give up fake black boxes that implicate them in the first place?

In the Iran airlines case, yes, there were communications on military channels, and commercial channels, but none on the air traffic channel.  Someone again screwed up.

I'm saying no one side is better than the other.  Bad human error, and 600 lives lost over two mistakes.

No, they did what they were supposed to do.  Your recounting isn't really very clear either.  It wasn't "commercial channels."   They broadcasted on the civilian emergency aviation frequency, which airliners are supposed to be monitoring even during normal operations.*  I would not expect the military to broadcast on all ATC frequencies in the area (there can be a high number depending on how busy the area is PLUS it's not too uncommon for an airliner to miss a change and be on the wrong frequency for a time (so you still aren't assured of reaching a non hostile target using local ATC bands).

In this case, I recall the Iranian airliner did have the emergency frequency tuned in, and heard them calling out for them.  The best guess the investigators came up with was that the pilots did not make the connection between themselves and the radio traffic.   These days such an incident is much less likely as modern airliners give a readout not just of airspeed and relative heading, but also groundspeed,  true airspeed and the track over the ground (instruments give a relative readout which decreases with pressure so at altitude it reads slower than you're actually going, I'll save the lesson in instrumentation and aerodynamics for another time).

*The exception is that it's not generally in procedure during takeoff and landing operations except in special circumstances.  Our changeover is generally altitude based.

That statement implies that if they shot down who they thought they were shooting down that it would be murder, which it wouldn't be.

Because that's exactly the same thing as paying shills to log onto every social media site from ChristianMingle to Chaturbate and spread bullshiat about how we had nothing to do with it, didn't know about it, and weren't even there that day.

Yeah, exactly the same.
