kimwim: So he winches it down, leaves his apartment, climbs down the stairs, meanwhile some asshole sees it lowered down, and cuts the lock, and rides off on it. When he comes out of the building, bike is gone.
whatdoyouexpect: How's she going to cook if she's out there holding the bike? What an idiot.
scanman61: I wonder about the load rating of that balcony he's mounted his winch on. Not to say russian building codes are weak, but....

jsmilky: why can't he just lock the front wheel, if it has that feature? then it can't be rolled away.
Gary-L: kimwim: So he winches it down, leaves his apartment, climbs down the stairs, meanwhile some asshole sees it lowered down, and cuts the lock, and rides off on it. When he comes out of the building, bike is gone.Never seen anything lowered upward before. Can you point us to some examples?/Lowered down = repetitive and redundant
ChubbyTiger: jsmilky: why can't he just lock the front wheel, if it has that feature? then it can't be rolled away. They don't roll them away. They pick the bike up and put it in a truck/van. The locks can be dealt with at their leisure offsite.
Greek: When I first moved back to Columbus, I used to keep my bicycle on my second floor balcony. Some farkwad came and stole it one day while I was at work. Took my month- old $550 bike and sold it to a second hand store for $50. I got it back, fortunately.
mark12A: If they shot bike thieves, this would not be a problem./just putting it out there//worked for horse thieves
Fissile: In Europe some cities are experimenting with 'bike trees'. Its a bike storage system where you hook the front wheel of your bike into to a lifting mechanism, swipe a card and the bike is lifted off the street and underneath a canopy. The bike is out of the elements, and can't be reached from the ground. The only way to get the bike back down is with the card.http://www.treehugger.com/bikes/bike-tree-keeps-bikes-off-ground-awa y- from-sticky-fingers.html
