Came here to make a broken clock comment.

"Nearly a quarter-century after McDonalds startled and delighted Soviets with their first taste of American fast-food culture"

Dafuq?!!! "Startled and delighted"? It was shiatty food for those who are in a hurry then and it is shiatty food for those who are in a hurry now. Admittedly, it was better than Soviet "stolovaja", but not by farkin much!

2014-07-26 05:08:23 AM
From what I can tell (at a distance all the way here in the US), Russia's health and moral protection laws were created as a weapon.  They are selectively applied to individuals and businesses that aren't towing the Putin line.

2014-07-26 05:09:46 AM
Oh sure. But it's not like McBorcht's is doing much better.

/especially since borcht is Ukranian...

I remember reading about the first McDs opening in Moscow.  It was a huge farking deal.  The place was always packed.  I believe it closed briefly in the late 80s or early 90s when the government was collapsing because it had become impossible to keep the place supplied.

McDonalds sucks but it's still better than Russian food.

Correction: "Russian laws were created as a weapon. They are selectively applied. Sometimes the application is targeted, sometimes it's pure random".

I'm under the impression that Russian McDonald's need to be locally supplied with Russian ingredients, so they're complaining about their own food regulations?

sounds about right.

2014-07-26 05:17:45 AM
McDonalds has been there long enough to know how these things work,  they'll have to send some gift$ to the Rospotrebnadzor then this whole thing will go away.

2014-07-26 05:36:29 AM
Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't McDonald have a policy of sourcing as much as possible of their food locally, ie from the countries their franchises are operating? At least that is what McDonald in Norway is stating in all their advertisements...

...so logically, Russian consumer protection agency is saying that food made from Russian cattle and fish is unsanitary and unhealthy. Good to know, I guess =)

That's a fantastic name. We should open up a chain called Brezhnev Burger just so we can shut it down.

I went to the McD in Moscow in the mid 90's.
The place was packed and the people there quite proud of this epitome of western eatery.

Tensions with Russia will rise in the coming months.
Culminating somewhere in February when it will be clear that western Europe cannot function without the hydrocarbons from its eastern part.
The world community will yield and Putin will have his "victory".

One does not start a war in eastern Europe during winter, even an economic one.

Which, much like North Korea, makes Russia look rather like a pathetic joke from the outside (though obviously not to the same degree).  One wonders why they can't see it, or if the do see it, don't care.

And yes, before the inevitable rejoinder, I do realize that something similar can be said about certain aspects of the USA, and many other countries as well (though again I would say it's to a considerably lesser degree).

too bad they still weren't communist, they'd appreciate the part about the state picking up the tab for half their worker wages in the form of food stamps and welfare

Isn't there a saying about how there has never been a war between two countries that have a McDonald's?

I thought the Falklands War might break that, but McDonald's was four years too slow in Argentina to prevent that one.

what is your point?

does communism conduce to the state being in charge of people being fed?
is communism a condition?

I would point you to this which may help you better define what communism is.

Caring about other people is at the core.

Southern Europe... the northwestern part of Europe is relatively energy stable and would be ok, given their supplies from Scandinavian and Arctic waters. The politics get interesting there.... the Dutch don't need Russian oil, the Germans only need it a little... but the weaker EU states, the ones with already crappy economies, are the ones trying to preserve Russian relations even when the member nations that contribute more are pretty pissed off. It will be interesting to see how that plays out in terms of overall EU stability.

interesting, if Russia was to close the valves, what would happen to Europe?
the Balkan area may shatter, sprouting instability on the eastern part of Europe.

what would happen of Europe then?

France and Germany together, the English trying not to commit (as usual) while the rest of the continent is in shamble going back and forth between east and west ideology.

Putin as a strong game. He has leverage,

McD also.

I'm sure McDonald's will be fine pulling major sponsorship from the World Cup in Russia, Mr. Putin. Go after Coca-Cola too, while you're at it. See what happens.

Somehow I think Putin is playing with that one.

We're into tea-bagging the bear territory now. I only predicted ethnic death squads in eastern Ukraine for August, not a Moscow crackdown on McD's.
