(ABC)   If you're an older lady and you want to make a few nice gestures for the kids in your community, it's probably not a good idea to start anonymously leaving porcelain dolls on the doorsteps of girls to whom they hold an eerie resemblance   (abcnews.go.com) divider line 78

Lol that is awesome.

When I was a Girl Scout way back when, it was an annual tradition to make May baskets out of construction paper, fill them with flowers picked locally, and anonymously leave them on neighbors' doorsteps.

Nowadays, Girl Scouts would be arrested for doing that. *shudder*

The hair on the doll is actual hair from the little girls.

I was really expecting this to be some creeper middle-aged pedo type when I read about this yesterday. It sounds like a lonely, awkward old lady just trying to be nice. But porcelain dolls are already a good 9.5 on the WTF-O-Meter. Leaving them anonymously on doorsteps jumps right into "Honey, we're moving to Mongolia tomorrow" territory.

Someone called "Boo Radley". Collect your winnings.

And I'll select "The Monsters Are On Maple Street" as my "Twilight Zone" episode.

The creepiness factor came from the parents themselves. They should admit it and don't blame "the times".

All I'm gonna say, is, Mongols might be a bit odd, but damned if they don't know how to party!

Don't wrestle one.  Ever.  You will lose even if you're seven feet of muscle.

Riiiight... But the guy walking around in a Duck Dynasty t-shirt isn't creepy.

Somebody totally called it in yesterday's thread. "A lonely old lady who didn't realize how it would look." I was learning toward that too.

The fact everyone jumps to the conclusion this is creepy saddens me. I'm not so sure it would be considered creepy 20 years ago.

we can be all scientific we want - in the form of horror movies that our subconscious has a real hard time telling from real memories (studies back this up), we've experienced real voodoo hundreds of times.

yes, it will fark you up, and your expectations of the world, for no reason at all.

No it's creepy you guys thought it was a pedophile dude. Get your minds out of the sewer. So happy it was a nice old lady so you all can realize how sad and jaded you all are.

It's better than hoarding cats, which seems to be the only other role on offer for 'older ladies'. Nice to see someone getting a little more creative.

The problem is just that porcelain dolls are creepy by nature.

I thought it would be an old lady oblivious of the creep factor, good to know that sometimes it isn't horrible.  Or at least as not-horrible as it can be when it involves porcelain dolls.  They fall into that uncanny valley category of nightmare fuel.

This and I'm proud of all the level headed people in that thread that called it early while I was wanting to make jokes about dolls.

Ummmm can you point out where I said it was a 'pedophile dude'? I don't care if it was Mr. Rogers (RIP) leaving these things, it's still f*ckin creepy.

This. It never occurred to me in 1000 years to think it was creepy until I read the Fark forums. One thing I have come to learn is that Millennials as a group are very intolerant.  If someone behaviors differently than the norm, and they don't like it, that's "creepy".  I've become more and more convinced that they are all going to turn into people who make the Tea Haddists seems like a sane, reasonable bunch.

Can we move the political derp back to the politics tab? I really don't care about everyone's political victim complexes.

Seems like a sweet gesture. Next time, ask the parents first or at least leave a note.

I think it's less about intolerance than it is a politically correct way of expressing aversion to those in the out-group.

When this lady was a girl, it would have been seen as a kind gesture, if odd - a surprise gift and random act of kindness.  A particularly thoughtful one, actually, a gift painstakingly customized to each child.  Now, the first reason that comes to mind is a child molester or potential kidnapper terrorizing future victims.

You know, it's really kind of sad that an innocent gesture like this is - rightfully - interpreted as a possible predator.

In 1994 this would have been super weird, same in 1984. I suspect you're remembering a past that didn't happen quite like you think it did. Remember razorblade apples and satanist scares?

"Creepy" might be an overstatement, but unless this is your first day on the interlink you must be accustomed to people overstating their opinions.

I reckon that the "creepy" factor as much as anything stemmed from the way the local news presented the story, at least in the video that I saw. There seemed to be a heavy emphasis on the likelihood of stalky behavior being behind it. Lots of worried looks and knitted brows from the presenters.
