1. Convene an international tribunal to investigate war crimes by both sides.

2. Indict both Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Hamas leader Khalid Meshaal for war crimes.

Doubtful, but what the hell? It's worth a try.

I saw that episode of West Wing.

the peaceful people our Creator intended.

Ha! That's rich considering this creator you speak of has long been a war god.

Maybe I missed it, but what's the plan? The article says:
What might be impactful, however, is if the National Council of Churches called together our interfaith partners with a nearly impossible task: to develop a set of principles to bring about peace between Israel and Palestine. Such discussions would have to include, of course, religious leaders from the region. Why take adversarial positions if instead together religious leaders from the United States -- where so much of the aid to both Israel and Palestine comes from -- and Israel and Palestine could come together and forge a peace plan to be presented to government leaders who have thus far failed to come to a diplomatic resolution?

So, isn't it essentially saying:
Plan for Middle East Peace
1. Come up with plan to bring about peace
2. ???
3. Peace

The penalties off-set, repeat 3rd down.

this
and it was presented by a christian who clearly has no clue about the war.
His get the leaders together implies that there are leaders, religious or otherwise.
Maybe he should go back and look at the last 1200 peace plans and try to find the common thread for failure.  WHY did they fail, over and over and over?

"the Hamas Charter affirmed in 1988, that Hamas was founded to liberate Palestine from Israeli occupation and to establish an Islamic state in the area that is now Israel, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip. "

So one sides GOAL is to eliminate the other side? what would they negotiate in a peace plan?
Yes, I know that on different days they have relaxed some of the words.

"In 2010 Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal stated that the Charter is "a piece of history and no longer relevant, but cannot be changed for internal reasons."[6] "

so no take backs?
why would other rational people want to negotiate with you again?

Unless it involves evacuating Jerusalem and nuking it into the ground so nobody can have it, I'm skeptical that ANY peace plan will work over there.

2014-07-25 06:30:57 PM
As long as the Arabs are committed to the ultimate destruction of Israel and the Jewish people, there can be no peace.

2014-07-25 06:31:12 PM
Will there be Muslims?
Will there be Jews?
Nope, it won't work.

Or did Subby just copy the headline, and get a greenlight?

And why can't I?

BravadoGT: As long as the Arabs are committed to the ultimate destruction of Israel and the Jewish people, there can be no peace.

The Arabs? Like... all of them?

It's a safe bet that the majority aren't that committed to the destruction of Israel and the Jewish people. Some of the most radical ones are and unfortunately some of those are leaders in the Palestinian territories. The question is how committed are they if a reasonable offer for peace is made (I know... people will disagree on what's reasonable) and if it's "death to Israel!" or bust, how long until they will be replaced by people who just want some land to call their own and peace?

I tried reading that and my eyes just kind of glazed over. Was there any point to that article or was it just a lot of random words strung together? I just saw a lot of talking about faith, blah blah blah.

2014-07-25 06:41:38 PM
So the plan is to just get everyone together in a big room and hug it out? Ok, sure.

2014-07-25 06:42:09 PM

Sticky Hands: huh....

I got that too, but it sounds like the old "If they would just talk to each other, they'd work out their problems!" myth championed by peaceniks, lifelong academics, and children.

How sweet.

2014-07-25 06:43:28 PM
This reasoning is something my 12 year old self would have thought up.

All we need for peace is for people to stop acting like people.

Basically, if the religious Israelis and Palestinians would just get together and work out a peace plan to present to the government, they just might be able to convince them to end the fighting.

There will never be peace in the Middle East because there are too many people who don't want it and they have the will and means to prevent it.

A plan so cunning it could not possibly fail.

2014-07-25 06:53:52 PM
I just realized what this article reminds me of. The naive attempt at problem-solving in the face of a complex issue with which the writer obviously has no experience is very reminiscent of If I Was a Poor Black Kid.

It may be absurd to think that religion leaders can succeed where all others have failed, but Muslims, Jews and Christians are part of the same family.

Yeah, and that's the problem. The entire Abrahamic family are dysfunctional violent shiatheads.  They've produced a few nephews or cousins who aren't as farked up as everyone else, but you're not going to solve anything through embracing your inbreeding.  Squabbling and killing each other are in the blood.

An absurd Middle East

With you on that.

peace plan

Sceptical.

that might work

haha, no.

What I got from the article was the idea of using religion not politics to bring peace. And unfortunately, isn't that what got them into this in the first place?

1) Come up with fail-safes on our nukes that prevent them from being detonated anywhere outside of the ME.
2) Hand them out like candy.

2014-07-25 07:02:43 PM
You know why talking hasn't worked? Too much emotion on both sides, too many barriers to effective communication. I say we get the Israeli and Palestinian leaders together to talk it out, but this time dose everybody up with a few tabs of MDMA. Maybe they'll be able to work past their issues. Or maybe it'll just devolve into a rave. Either way, it's something that HASN'T been tried.

1. Invade both Israel and Palestine.
2. Treat the occupied both as subjected people and second class residents, committing war crimes against all populations.
3. The once divided peoples unite against a foreign enemy.
4. The newly united Isristine/Palesrael thrive as a liberated, united country, off to commit crimes against some other people.

2014-07-25 07:09:52 PM
Some Jewish groups have accused U.S. churches considering divestment of anti-Semitism. How do such absurd statements -- and many such as these are being made across social media -- help?

It's not supposed to help. But really, if they would just admit that Jesus is Lord, everything would probably turn out ok.

2014-07-25 07:11:23 PM
Peace itself is an unattainable thing, that's what people need to accept. Lets even say we managed world peace somehow, it wouldn't last. War is part of human nature, it's been like that since....well a long ass time ago. Eventually some nation somewhere would pick a fight for some mundane reason out of, if anything, pure boredom. And having delicates representing the three big warring religions come together isn't going to help anything, unless of course they re-wrote their bibles and eliminated every trace of anything hinting about violence and intolerance for future generations.....that's not very likely either. So for these reasons, among several others, people of the world just need to accept the impossibility of world peace and stop wasting their time.

Don't forget that those religious Israelis and Palestinians will have the guiding hand of the community of Christian Churches, who both have an excellent grasp of the local conflict and a deep and abiding respect for other faiths...

The majority of Gazans voted Hamas into leadership, whose charter and singular purpose is the destruction of Israel and the Jews.  It can be tempting to look at them though the prism of western moral relativism, but at this point, they are closest to North Koreans--poorly educated, heavily propagandized, and taught to hate from the moment they draw their first breath.

2014-07-25 07:14:18 PM
The only way there will be peace in the middle east is if two things happen.

1. Hamas and all radical Islamic groups cease to exist and a Palestinian nation is established.

or

2. Israel ceases to exist.

Neither is going to happen.

I was going to go with "Well, if they'd just accept Jesus Christ as their personal savior, none of this would be a problem."

"As a progressive Christian minister in the United Church of Christ " is one of those phrases where I know what all the words mean, but...
