For anyone who commuted in the Bay Area this morning, this is old news. I'd already forgotten about it until I saw the headline and was like, "again?"

Probably just a Wolff in sheeps clothing.

I was on Bart when they made the system wide announcement that they weren't going into Oakland. People seemed relieved.

A thread about BART! You've waited your entire Fark career for this moment! It's only slightly relevant, but that's enough!

Dr. House's Vicodin: A thread about BART! You've waited your entire Fark career for this moment! It's only slightly relevant, but that's enough!

fark you.

Do you live in the Bay Area?  If not, fark off.  If you do, where in the Bay Area do you live?  Where in the Bay Area do you work?

Every other concentration of worker will say: "durr, put more jobs by more stations!".  Instead, the Bay Area gets a Randian permutation of "the best jobs will end up by the best stations" (or some such stupidity.  Which agency?  How often?)

To put real numbers on such: 5k commuters per day use the bus (over public transit) [https://www.google.com/green/efficiency/oncampus/]

Short version: due to balkanization, the bay area transit systems are doing their best to survive in a world where each agency is doing its damnedest to force every surrounding agency to pay for everything.   Just guess how that works out.

You're taking a random internet stranger's offhand comment a little too seriously.

If an offhand comment is moronic, why not jump on it? Well, unless one is pretending to be above feeding trolls on that particular day.

I don't think the comment was moronic, he had a point.

he was being a dick about it, sure.

Just saying, responder was overreacting. You are only allowed an opinion if you live in the bay area?

You're only allowed to have your opinion respected if you actually know something about that upon which you opine.

He stated upthread that he lives in the bay area. Funnily, the guy who said "fark off if you don't live in the bay ", does not live in the bay.

Hi there, sweetheart. What's making you angry? Do you want to talk about it?

I've commuted via permutations of BART, MUNI, Caltrain, and VTA for several years. I've even ridden the Google buses that you think you're qualified to talk about, since I used to work at Google, so I'm intimately familiar with the issues around those that are in vogue. I know local issues, and bickering about Marin and San Mateo opting out of BART nearly a lifetime later is just old news, which is why I made an offhand Fark comment.

I live close enough to Caltrain that each train shakes my apartment.  You should be respecting  my opinion.

He's talking about Google's private bus fleet. You have to click the link to see that, though, which I ended up doing because that remark confused me too.

I think it speaks for itself that he tried to make that a Reddit link, by the way.

Heh.  My location information is out of date; I do in fact now live in the Bay Area, and actually work for Google.

I'm not on a Google bus route, but kinda going cross-Peninsula -- so my ~12mi commute is usually only 15-20min.  If I were studlier, I'd probably bike to work, but ... I'm not.  The company gave me corporate housing in the city for the first few months, and I used the busses then; they weren't as convenient as I would have liked, but they saved me having to use my own car for weeks at a time.

As for reddit-style links, I had no idea.  I don't understand how the current Fark commenting window works, so I just use the old-school Usenet "put references in brackets" if it's convenient at the time.

And my anger at the initial comment was really redirected frustration at the balkanization of transit out here (and related issues with housing etc).  The original farker wasn't really to blame, other than trivializing something that is decidedly non-trivial to current and prospective residents.  :-/
