I remember watching her deliver this speech. My Mother (who more than likely never voted for her) told me to watch "history in the making". 40 years later, her words are still stirring.

Common sense would be revolted if we engaged upon this process for petty reasons. Congress has a lot to do: Appropriations, Tax Reform, Health Insurance, Campaign Finance Reform, Housing, Environmental Protection, Energy Sufficiency, Mass Transportation. Pettiness cannot be allowed to stand in the face of such overwhelming problems. So today we are not being petty. We are trying to be big, because the task we have before us is a big one.

If Ms. Jordan were around today to see the level the GOP have stooped to in order to be petty, partisan and vindictive in the face of America's first African American president I imagine she'd have some more words to say.

In forty years, we went from this level of eloquence to "aspersions in my asparagus" and "calves the size of cantaloupes."

I don't even have a snarky comment about that.

From years of reading internet comments, I'm having a hard time reconciling the use of "we the people" and "eloquent" in the same sentence.

I have read through the speech and I have attempted to identify words that an average "tea party" member (whether in office or amongst the electorate) would not recognize or would not be able to correctly define.

Thus far, I have identified only "hyperbole", "diminution", "obfuscated", and "juxtapose".

I suspect that, in addition to perhaps simply not adequately focusing upon specific words (as I was also attempting to read the speech with an understanding of its intent), I am overestimating the intelligence of a typical "tea party" representative. I suspect, as an example, that Representative Gohmert likely lacks an adequate understanding of far more words in the speech than those that I listed above.

Is anyone else willing to append additional ideas to my list?

Don't even get me started. I use to live in that district. Barbara Jordan followed by Mickey Leland followed by Craig Washington (who basically phoned it in) followed by you've-got-to-be-farking-kidding-me.  We fly into Austin once or twice a year. I always make a point of taking the kids to Barbara's statue.  I knew her superficially when she was at the LBJ school. Nobody's fool that lady.

To be fair and balanced, we should find the most articulate rebuttal to Barbara Jordan's speech -- there had to have been at least  one Southern state that wasn't going to let that uppity, um,  socialist talk to them that way, right? -- and attach a link to it.

No, she would have recognized this President as the unqualified buffoon that he is. She wouldn't have granted him Godhood just because he was a black liberal.

Barbara Jordan's best speech was probably her opening statement at the Bork confirmation hearings.

She starts at 2:58:06.

Get yourself a box of Kleenex.

Take your pick as to which label is less appropriate - "unqualified buffoon" or "liberal".

She's the only person for whom I've ever made a point to observe the tradition of paying respect to someone lying in state (at the LBJ school in fact). It's something that, while it impressed me to see crowds in line on such occasions, had generally struck me as a bit odd. But in that instance, it seemed a necessary obligation not to be ignored.
