Not that I'm a hard core gamer, but I've never heard of this video game. And it sounds like it's a dreadfully boring game. I have, however, played numerous versions of "Leisure Suit Larry" way back when.

Yeah, the moment the author used the phrase "beta male," he lost all credibility.

I'm reminded of my high school English teacher. He also liked to read all sorts of bullsh*t into stories that CLEARLY had no intention of conveying such things.

I didn't think anyone made dating sims except as flash games. Damn, Japan. You scary.

Also, I don't think that it's an indictment of gamer culture so much as a reflection of the niche demographic of Japanese super-introverts that it clearly caters to.

No one can rightfully call Catherine sexist, because no one made it past the puzzle sections of the game to get to the story part.

/Not without cheating, anyway.

This is one of those words that has officially lost all meaning and is just used to end all arguments. No, this game is not sexist. It a god damn story... it treats itself like a insane game. Its like trying to take Sudo 51 seriously... Killer 7, Lollypop Chainsaw, No More Heroes... are these games to be taken seriously? I see insane fun.

Only played parts of Catherine... not the entire game.

Isn't it sexist to use terms like "beta male" and "omega male" to describe men?  I mean, you are judging them as if they are animals, rather than judging them as fully formed.  Such language perpetuates the myth that men are animalistic and cannot be civilized.

You see, Mutton is actually the ancient Sumerian demigod Dumuzid, and Catherine is a demon succubus who seduces men by taking on their ideal form."

Yeah... I can see how the game is just a huge reflection of important social issues there.  I mean, as a society, we really need to learn how to treat Sumerian Demigod and Succubi as if there aren't just slabs of meant placed on earth for the amusement of piggish men.

The "dating sim" part of Catherine is less than half of the game, and very little of the gameplay.  The bulk of the game is an insane puzzle platformer that is great to play.  Although it's so difficult they had to add an easy mode for the US release.  There's even an additional mini-game that you can go the entire game without playing, but is even more challenging and nearly as long as the main game.

And like someone said above, it's as sexist about men as it is about women.

That one actually doesn't bother me.  Cis come from Latin and mean (On the side of) and makes sense as the opposite of transgender.  It makes a decent scientific term when necessary.

Using terminology like Aplha Male, Beta Male, and Omega Male when describing humans is just bad science, bad sociology, and can easily be offensive

What about Custer's Revenge?

Also, the main premise of the article is that since fantasy is more appealing than reality, the game is sexist. Isn't fantasy always more appealing than reality (unless you really suck at fantasizing)? That's the whole point of fantasy. But fantasy is a lie. That's the whole point behind the Cypher scene in "the Matrix" he chooses fantasy over reality and is the villain. I haven't played the game, but from the description it seems like the game makes it clear that you are choosing to believe in a lie rather than "man up" and face reality. I hardly think that qualifies as glorifying the choice.

Especially when we're talking about Japanese culture.  Or more specifically the Japanese love industry.  This kind of thing is not taken seriously across the pond(you know, it's intended audience), so why should we?

a "dating sim" sounds like something a serial killer would play...

Anyone else sick of the masses of whiny (mostly male) bloggers writing essays declaring male culture misogynistic and laden with rape? As if their writing about the 'manocratic maleocracy' on some tech site is somehow correcting the balance rather than just replacing misogyny with misandry and is anything other than the regular white knight bullshiat that crowd usually spews in a misguided attempt to score favour with the opposite sex?

Does anyone else recall a text based game for (I'm guessing) maybe the C64 that was all about selecting your drinks and trying to get laid.  I only vaguely remember it; the only thing that really dings in my head is that one of the drinks you could pick was an Alabama Slammer - if your character drank that, you were really in danger of getting ill / passing out / not getting laid.

Or what about an awful, badly animated game for the C64 where all you did was wiggle the stick back and forth as quickly as possible to cause the two characters to fark.  Each level changed positions, until the final level which I believe was a five-some that looked more like something out of a Human Centipede sequel than an actual sexual experience.

Man, pre-internet childhood sucked but kids today will never know the baffling combination of excitement and utter confusion that comes with finding porn in the woods.

Others have noted it, but the author isn't terribly credible with the use of terms like "omega male" and is either reading more into the game than is there or is choosing to ignore the implications of the male character's depiction.

None of these social justice warriors even play video games, that's why it took this idiot 3 years to finally get around to seeing what Catherine was even about (and OF COURSE they didn't play it all the way through and passed judgement anyway).  I highly resent these people trying to take over the video game industry, I play video games specifically to get away from politics, and they're actively ruining it.

Nevermind, I surprisingly found this one on Wikipedia (after looking at the Booty Call link above).  It was called "Sex Games," and it was only available for the C-64.  Kind of a shame, as I bet it would have been brilliant on a C-128.

I play videogames specificcally to argue in articles that I write for slate that games like Zelda are subtly advocating a return to a feudal patriarchy by depicting (insert long explanation here) as the ideal state.

I played through it with the difficulty on the lowest setting.  It made it actually beatable.

The arcade game in the bar is pretty good too since your constrained by moves instead of time.  Too bad you're limited in the number of attempts you can make per night, though.
