Is it too judgmental to assume that someone in need of methadone might not be able to practice good parenting during their treatment?  Methadone is still a drug and addicts aren't really known for being good at caring for infants.

Not sticking up for the broad, but methadone is also prescribed for pain management.

You guys know that methadone is used in pain management as well, right?  You don't have to be an addict to be on methadone.

/although once on methadone, you'll be an addict

If only we could mix something in that would make them sterile for as long as they were on the drugs...

I know that Methadone is used in pain management, I never saw anything that says you should store it in your kids bottle. What does she do, suck on it?

phalaeo: getting off methadone was one of the hardest things I've ever done.

Congratulations for getting through that.  I was addicted to methadone once, too.  I had less trouble getting off than you did, but it was no picnic.  Later I picked up a heroin habit, which was relatively easy to kick in comparison, even after several years.  The biggest problem I have now is learning to deal with life without access to drugs that can change the way I feel, instantly.  I had to make my life very small, if you will, with safeguards in place, just in case.

That got me curious too. As an opiate addict myself, I know where my stuff is at all times. But I also go through a lot to get it. Lady that sells to me, who is prescribed everything, never knows where her stuff is, has it out all over the place. 5 days clean today, cold turkey morphine.

I would be the first to put her against the wall; but I have questions.

how is methadone stored?
is it a powder, a liquid?
could there be mistakes handling formula and methadone in a messy environment?

why would she put it into the bottle in the first place?

addiction is a biatch...
if addicted, the adictee would not want to share the addictive substance.
he/she would rather save it for later in a "safe place".

Which brings me back to "why would she put it in the bottle?".

in the end, was there intent to cause harm or did she put it there to save it to fulfill later cravings?

was the bottle a "safe place" in her mind?

try to put yourself into her "shoes"; what would you do?

//monkeys everywhere!!

And the asshole pain management doc who put you on that in the first place needs to be cockpunched.  And have his license revoked.  And cockpunched again.

Yes, it is...

There are quite a few women with kids at the clinic I go to and every one of them (at least the ones I've seen) are in good health, dressed in better and more expensive clothes than me, and are usually really sweet and well mannered kids. Granted there's one or two of the moms I've seen that are horrendous, ghetto biatches but take any subsection of the population and a certain % of them are going to be awful. In my pregnancy group, the majority of us are first time moms and if anything, are going above and beyond what's necessary to prepare for and ensure a good life for our babies. The one girl just had her little boy and she's always got him with her, breastfeeding him, making sure he's covered so the sun isn't getting on him, dresses him in the most adorable little outfits :) It's a really supportive and productive group and honestly, I'd trust any one of the women who also attend to watch my baby if it ever came down to it. Just because they (myself included) have had issues with addiction doesn't mean they are incapable of being good parents and putting the needs of their children above their own, especially the ones who are in a program trying to get better and away for the street cycle.

This woman in TFA sounds like she was getting her methadone off the street though, without a structured program built around a prescription that greatly improves the odds of successfully staying away from dope. It takes a lot of good behavior to earn take home privileges with your methadone and when you DO get it, they provide it to you in pre-portioned bottles of their own so there would be absolutely no reason to switch containers.

This lady just sounds like a farking idiot and is casting a pretty dark and shiatty shadow on the rest of us who are doing things the "right" way and legitimately trying to get better by adhering to the rules of our programs :/

And I can't be the first to call shenanigans on biatchface.

Option 1:  She took her meds out of the bottle they were dispensed in, put them in a baby bottle, and then a chronic pain patient lost track of her meds.
Option 2: Baby is crying.  Methadone makes her sleepy.  Give baby methadone, problem solved.

You can do it!  If you have a support group, your odds are much better.  If you don't care for the *Anonymous and similar groups, be sure you set up some safeguards.  Don't lose all hope if you should falter- stay at it, you can do it!
