(News.com.au)   In the weird world of women's doubles tennis, if your partner is unable to continue you can play alone against the other team, but you can't return serves on your former partner's side of the court. Who knew?   (news.com.au) divider line 11

So, one is obligated to lose?

Hell with that, I'd quit.

This was actually a World TeamTennis event (yes "TeamTennis" is one word).  The WTT doesn't use advantage, so it is theoretically possible for her to win games even if she's not serving.  In addition, your team gets a point for each game you win, so even if she knows she's going to lose the set, she can still help her team by winning a game or two.

It's not a women's doubles rule; it's a TeamTennis rule (I'd imagine in a regular tournament you'd just forfeit). And it makes sense in that, let's just say one person is wayyyyy crappier than the other - you don't get to switch sides on returns (you HAVE to switch sides on serves).

My question is - does she automatically forfeit the games where her partner was supposed to serve? It seems like she'd have to in order to be consistent with the "no returning on your partner's side" rule.

BTW, don't hit your doubles partner in the head.

...it will leave a dull impression on her mind.

When I played tennis in high school (in the early 90s), this was one of the training/practice methods we used.  It's a variation on "Canadian Doubles" or "Australian Doubles".
