Mayim Bialik will host the Candid Camera reboot, which will air on TV Land, the home for forgotten shows and actors, heavily edited reruns that lack true closing credits, and odd show start times to insert more commercials.

Some 'Splainin' To Do: At best, this tells me that she's made a personal decision for her own family that I don't agree with (with a chunk of that blame falling on her pediatrician) and that she doesn't have a strong enough opinion to tell others what they ought to be doing.

Let's translate this a bit:

At best, this tells me she's made a personal decision to let her children suffer terribly from preventable diseases that are likely to give them a childhood - and possibly lifetime - of sickness and pain, as well as a significantly shortened life span.  She will do this in the face of every piece of credible, verified scientific evidence and study that has shows that no advancement in human history has bettered and extended our lives more than the invention of the vaccine.

She has not made this decision for herself, but has made it for others unable to care for themselves and require her to make sane, safe, and proactive medical decisions.  And as a trained scientist, she lacks the courage to either stand up for her misplaced beliefs and say vaccines are "bad" or adjust those beliefs based on the verified evidence of the entirety of the medical community.

She's a featured player on the top-rated sitcom on the top-rated network and this is all her agent could do? Even Saget got "Funniest Home Videos"

Nogale: wildcardjack: Land_of_the_Magic_Dragon: IamKaiserSoze!!!: I thought she had a PhD in some neurological (too lazy to google) field. The only impression I used to have of her was that I respected a young actress who was driven enough to leave her career to study to get a real job.

Guess my impression of her was wrong.

She has a PhD but her views have made her a outcast in her field.

No, the fact that her dissertation was Masters level at best makes her an outcast in the field.

Then why did they award her a PhD? Does everyone who submits a doctoral dissertation get the degree? Are you in the field, and have you read her work?

I'm a neuroscientist. She's never published anything beyond her dissertation, which only did blood tests and behavioral evaluations on 51 people. Probably enough for a paper in a middling journal (judging from just what's available in my link), but nothing ever made it to a peer-reviewed journal in the 7 years since her defense, as far as I can see.

It's weird that her half dozen conference presentations during grad school were all single-author. Bialik must've had some special arrangement with UCLA in which she didn't do the normal thing & work in someone's lab. In any case, she has made zero apparent impact in neuroscience research.

Some people who get PhDs really shouldn't. UCLA probably went with the positive press of having a B-list celeb (at the time) get a doctorate than the likely weird negative press that would have accompanied the failure of a B-list celeb's thesis defense.

/shiat like this pisses me off...it cheapens my degree.

For real?

Wiki: Bialik has been criticized for supporting views that go against the findings of science, including anti-vaccine and homeopathy

Goddammitsomuch.

Some 'Splainin' To Do: hstein3: Some 'Splainin' To Do: plecos: Fark that anti-vaxxer.

Citation needed. I'm having a hard time accepting that a trained neurobiologist is an anti-vaxxer.

In her own words:

http://www.kveller.com/mayim-bialik/vaccinations-and-other-things-i- do nt-want-to-discuss/

http://celebritybabies.people.com/2009/06/04/mayim-bialik-talks-atta ch ment-parenting-with-cbb/

So the first article is her saying that she doesn't care to talk about it and that she's never told anyone whether or not to vaccinate their children, and the second article has her saying,

We are a non-vaccinating family, but I make no claims about people's individual decisions. We based ours on research and discussions with our pediatrician, and we've been happy with that decision, but obviously there's a lot of controversy about it.

At best, this tells me that she's made a personal decision for her own family that I don't agree with (with a chunk of that blame falling on her pediatrician) and that she doesn't have a strong enough opinion to tell others what they ought to be doing.

I'm sorry, but this hardly seems matches up to the impression of a screaming anti-vaxxer that I was expecting based on the comments in this thread.

As for attachment parenting, I couldn't give a fark. Stupid parenting trends are stupid, but hardly unique.

She's definitely not as strident an anitvaxxer as Jenny McCarthy, but her influences have been more subtle. She's been a "celebrity spokesperson" for the Holistic Moms Network, which is decidedly antivax. Her pediatrician (and the forward author of her book) is well-known as McCarthy's pediatrician and an antivaxxer. In her "I don't wanna talk about it" blog post you refer to, she says this steaming load of misinformation: "Children today get about four times as many vaccines as the average 35-year-old did when we were kids" (true-ish, but misleading--# of antigens much smaller) and promotes two antivax books (look at Feder's claims for yourself; Sears developed his own vaccine schedule based on pseudoscience and false assertions)

These are public stances. She's not the worst antivaxxer, but she's quite well-known and has the (questionably deserved, IMO--see above) PhD to give her opinion more weight than it should; passive promotion of dangerous nonsense is still worth fighting.

I know, right? This is complete bullshiat! I'm pretty goddamned sure that the same piece of shiat hack writes all of the Deadline Hollywood headlines on this site and the farking stupid-ass sunuvabiatches keep getting greened. It's a farking conspiracy, I tell ya, and whatever happened to the [PLUG] tag anyway, cause that's all FARK and that hack sonuvabiatch are doing...

Her views on the raising of children are even creepier. Bird feeding children to promote bonding. Breast feeding to 7-9 years of age among other things.

She was on Howard Stern talking about this and potty training kids from birth. No diapers ever. She says that infants give signals they are about to pee and poop. She said that her kids were potty trained at 1 yr old but still had some accidents. Howard said, that means they arent trained yet.

Dragonflew: She is an anti-vaxer? I thought she was intelligent, I must be confusing her with Punky Brewster or someone.

You might be confusing her with Danica McKeller. She co-authored a paper that resulted in a new math theorem, the "Chayes-McKellar-Winn theorem". Giving her a Erdős number of 4.

Ah, but you see... If she renounced homeopathy and became a pro-vax campaigner, her PhD would still be so much wallpaper.

That's what I was trying to figure out. She's on pretty much every episode of "Big Bang Theory" and has been for a few years... why is she going to the land where former stars go to slowly die?
