Some 'Splainin' To Do: hstein3: Some 'Splainin' To Do: plecos: Fark that anti-vaxxer.

Citation needed. I'm having a hard time accepting that a trained neurobiologist is an anti-vaxxer.

In her own words:

http://www.kveller.com/mayim-bialik/vaccinations-and-other-things-i- do nt-want-to-discuss/

http://celebritybabies.people.com/2009/06/04/mayim-bialik-talks-atta ch ment-parenting-with-cbb/

So the first article is her saying that she doesn't care to talk about it and that she's never told anyone whether or not to vaccinate their children, and the second article has her saying,

We are a non-vaccinating family, but I make no claims about people's individual decisions. We based ours on research and discussions with our pediatrician, and we've been happy with that decision, but obviously there's a lot of controversy about it.

At best, this tells me that she's made a personal decision for her own family that I don't agree with (with a chunk of that blame falling on her pediatrician) and that she doesn't have a strong enough opinion to tell others what they ought to be doing.

I'm sorry, but this hardly seems matches up to the impression of a screaming anti-vaxxer that I was expecting based on the comments in this thread.

As for attachment parenting, I couldn't give a fark. Stupid parenting trends are stupid, but hardly unique.

She's definitely not as strident an anitvaxxer as Jenny McCarthy, but her influences have been more subtle. She's been a "celebrity spokesperson" for the Holistic Moms Network, which is decidedly antivax. Her pediatrician (and the forward author of her book) is well-known as McCarthy's pediatrician and an antivaxxer. In her "I don't wanna talk about it" blog post you refer to, she says this steaming load of misinformation: "Children today get about four times as many vaccines as the average 35-year-old did when we were kids" (true-ish, but misleading--# of antigens much smaller) and promotes two antivax books (look at Feder's claims for yourself; Sears developed his own vaccine schedule based on pseudoscience and false assertions)

These are public stances. She's not the worst antivaxxer, but she's quite well-known and has the (questionably deserved, IMO--see above) PhD to give her opinion more weight than it should; passive promotion of dangerous nonsense is still worth fighting.

There may well be more to it than that. I'm given to understand she was a celebrity spokesperson for a group promoting "holistic" medicine, anti-vaccination being among their views; links to that information come up broken, so it's possible she ended that relationship.

Nonetheless, I think the general complaint comes down to 1) she has a PhD in a biological science but has fallen for the inhuman anti-vaccination pablum, and 2) she trades on her credentials (cheapened as they are by point 1) when discussing parenting.

ArkAngel: Pentaxian: Dragonflew: She is an anti-vaxer? I thought she was intelligent, I must be confusing her with Punky Brewster or someone.

You might be confusing her with Danica McKeller. She co-authored a paper that resulted in a new math theorem, the "Chayes-McKellar-Winn theorem". Giving her a Erdős number of 4.

They both have a Bacon number of 2

Hell, even I have a Bacon number of 2.  My old boss was in the marching band scene in "Animal House", when she was in high school.

anybody that has a Phd in any hard science is smarter than all three of us put together.

Oh, no. I would never confuse anyone with Danica McKellar! :)

Wait, she spits food into the mouth of her children? Can I get a link for this? I would like to be properly disgusted.

I read it was Alicia Silverstone that pre-chews her baby's food and then spits it in the baby's mouth.

Let's translate this a bit:

At best, this tells me she's made a personal decision to let her children suffer terribly from preventable diseases that are likely to give them a childhood - and possibly lifetime - of sickness and pain, as well as a significantly shortened life span.  She will do this in the face of every piece of credible, verified scientific evidence and study that has shows that no advancement in human history has bettered and extended our lives more than the invention of the vaccine.

She has not made this decision for herself, but has made it for others unable to care for themselves and require her to make sane, safe, and proactive medical decisions.  And as a trained scientist, she lacks the courage to either stand up for her misplaced beliefs and say vaccines are "bad" or adjust those beliefs based on the verified evidence of the entirety of the medical community.

Fano: Isn't this the hot bald chick from the first Star Trek movie?

Nope, you're thinking of Persis Khambatta.  She died in 1998 of a heart attack.

Why did Ms. Bialik think she needed to become the next Allen Funt? She has a Ph. D in neurobiology;
she's on a Top 10 TV show (Amy Farrah Fowler on "The Big Bang Theory"); she's probably still
receiving residuals from "Blossom"; she's got two kids.....at this point, I'd want a long furlough
("to make "vhoopee...mitt schnapps, und beautiful frauleins!").

FirstNationalBastard: DanZero: Mayim Bialik will host the Candid Camera reboot, which will air on TV Land, the home for forgotten shows and actors, heavily edited reruns that lack true closing credits, and odd show start times to insert more commercials.

/network rot ftw

Do they run anything other than some Andy Griffith reruns?

King of Queens, Everybody Loves Raymond, Golden Girls, The Cosby Show, Hot in Cleveland.....um a few others but I cannot remember. I like the channel because it has shows I was too young to watch or wasn't born when they originally aired. Between TBS and TVLand, I am in heaven! lol
