The Africanized Bee thing is just another bullshiat racist media scare tactic. It has nothing to do with Africa or "Africanization." in hymenopterans.

I think you are incorrect, and I think you are correct.  The word has been misconstrued, and it would be best to avoid it when possible.

http://www.wikihow.com/Escape-from-Killer-Bees
Africanized honey bees (Apis mellifera scutellata) originated from African bees brought to Brazil in the 1950s, hybridized in an attempt to produce a bee better suited to tropical climates.[1] They have gradually made their way up from Brazil, officially reaching the USA on October 19, 1990 when a swarm was documented.[2] However, there is no need to panic. Hollywood hype came up with the "killer bee" term, owing to the ferocity of the bees when riled. While Africanized honey bees are very defensive and easily provoked,[3] they are generally not a threat to humans provided they are not riled. However, if you are attacked by Africanized honey bees, you can take the following steps to get away from them and protect yourself and others.

1 ↑ USDA, Africanized Honey Bee, http://www.invasivespeciesinfo.gov/animals/afrhonbee.shtml
2 ↑ Nationalatlas.gov, What's Buzzing with Africanized Honey Bees?, http://www.nationalatlas.gov/articles/biology/a_bees.html
3 ↑ Wikipedia, Africanized bees, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Africanized_bee

The term "Africanized" has taken on a life of its own.  It was meant to indicate that the hardier bees developed as a hybrid were of a lineage of African bees that had the desired characteristics that would make them more suited to life in Brazil.  It was not meant to be a slur against persons from Africa against whom grand prejudice has been made in American cultural history.

Africanized was meant to mean "made ideal for conditions in Brazil due to the desired characteristics of the African bee."

A better term, in light of the misperception, is maybe just "Killer Bee."

When the media talk about, for example, Avian Flu, they're over-hyping a potentially serious thing. It's not a catastrophe right now, but it's someone worth keeping in the back of your head because it really could become a problem.

When the media talk about Africanized bees, however, you can rest assured that all you're watching is 30 minutes of TV run by a news producer who spent the first 3 hours of the day drinking hard liquor in seedy bars and the proceeding 3 hours in the rented hotel room of a "female" prostitute named "Ariel" with an unusually pronounced clitoris.

[csb] The first time I took a strong dose of a mescaline bearing cactus(T. Pachnoii in this instance) I was sitting in my front yard, back against the fence marveling at how beautiful everything looked. The sky was an impossible shade of blue and I could feel it acting in my system, everything felt different in an undefinable way and sounds were magnified. Suddenly I hear a loud buzzing, and because I was an idiot on a strong dose of a psychedelic I go, "Woah, that's new" instead of looking for a source and continue sitting there contentedly. Suddenly I see my neighbor scoop his kid off the ground and run screaming back into his house and look straight forward and realize there's a huge swarm of bees moving directly at me.

I stood calmly, looked around for my cat for a couple of seconds(she'd been sitting in my lap until the buzzing started) as they swarmed around me, then realized what an idiot I was being and barreled over my fence and back into the studio I lived in and slammed shut the windows. My cat was already back in the place, looking a bit panicked but not hurt. I watched them continue on their way through the window in the back, completely mystified. Overall it was a pretty cool experience, everything was really slow and I could see the intricate ways the swarm moved in perfectly, and I didn't panic at any point. But that's how I came up on mescaline the first time, it was a trip(pun fully intended).[/csb]

I've always heard to get indoors(obviously safe) or under water if shelter isn't available. I dunno, I co-existed with a hive about twenty feet from my bedroom window with no screen for a long time at another place and apart from chasing a bee back out of the window a few times a month I didn't mind them. I'm not allergic and not really aggressive towards bees(now on the other hand I have a raging kill-boner for wasps, got stung once and now I'll kill them wherever I can find them) so I don't find them problematic. I even kind of enjoyed the constant low hum. Never dealt with "killer" bees though, I imagine you just don't piss them off, as I recall they're just bees which get insanely aggressive when farked with.

I'm a beekeeper, they're called "Africanized" honey bees because they are a hybrid between the docile European honeybee Apis mellifera mellifera  and the African honey bee Apis mellifera scutellata .  The result is an extremely aggressive honeybee which swarms (splits in to two colonies) at a much higher frequency than European honeybees.  So, they're extremely defensive and they multiply at a much higher rate. There are reports of AHB's chasing victims for more than a 1/4 mile.  They've spread from South America to the lower United States.  They expand their territory about 200 miles per year.  But because of migrant pollination services (moving bees on trucks)  they've leapfrogged from one area to another.  Not that they need to ride on trucks to move about the country.

The Africanized honeybee is not a naturally occurring breed of honeybee.   It's name has nothing to do with racism it has to do with the difference between European honeybees and the actual introduction of African bee genetics in to the species.

What a European bee hive looks like.  Note that for all their power (turn sound UP), they are not attacking.

They are loading up with honey as they prepare to swarm from their freshly exposed hive.

/guy has some experience but is pretty much a doofus to call these aggressive.
