They should've just chopped it down and turned it into mulch. Do you know what a cubic yard of albino redwood mulch is going for these days? Good stuff, man.

I'm interested in how a tree can be a chimera.  I don't know too much about the biology of trees, but are trees ever specifically male or female?

Yes.

This is actually pretty cool.  It's one tree, so it's not going to cost that much (in the context of the whole project).  And, this is a pretty rare tree.  Good on the railroad.

As the jubilant residents left the meeting where they learned they saved the tree, a homeless man asked for change. They told him to get a job and walked away.

OK, I guess that's not the right question. A cursory wiki search of male and female trees shows that "most trees" have both male and female traits.  So wouldn't all of those be labelled as Chimeras?  What specifically is the difference?  Or are chimera trees not rare?

Thank you, that made me laugh!

Good for the tree savers! They have been widening 101 from Petaluma up to Windsor, and all along the way they have been cutting down redwoods that were along side of the freeway, 20-50 feet off of the road. Not only does it look barren now, the company who cut them down charged a lot of $ to do it, and then turned around and sold off the wood for lumber and mulch for more than it cost them. Apparently some trees that didn't need to be removed disappeared as well; it was a pretty shady deal all the way around...

2014-07-24 03:21:49 PM
The railroad was blocked by a tree.
Or perhaps it was two trees or three.
But as lumberjacks should,
they hungered for wood.
Hey has anyone seen Frank and Lee?

Lots of ways, but especially if two seeds germinate together they can self-graft. It is one tree with two distinct (but likely closely related) genetic makeups. If everything goes right it acts as one organism and in this case the albino part is supported by the photosynthesis of the other part. Some species are more tolerant than others. Apple trees are commonly grafted to produce hybrids with one root stock and several branches that produce different varieties of apples.

What is essentially the opposite can also occur. A very old tree (search for ancient Yews) can have it's trunk hollowed out and with the right amount of time and weathering become a ring of individuals that were once the same tree. Another way that happens is seen in some Oak trees that send down supports for vary large branches. If cut off from the main trunk the branch can continue to grow on it's own.

Trees can be thousands of years old even if no part of them still in existence is more than a few hundred years old, which complicates dating the "oldest tree".

I want a jumpstart that is working from someone else's work of growing something for the last 10-20 years that I can plant and not have to worry about mowing under and get the sense of actually having a tree and not just an overgrown weed.
