As a Jewish Raiders' fan, I'm not sure what part of this headline I should be more offended about.

Is submitter implying that the Raiders are going to take all the other NFL teams' stadiums and make the other 31 teams play all of their games in a dusty vacant lot in El Centro? Because that would be kind of funny.

Hey now, FO gives them a 0.03% chance to win the super bowl, so anything's possible

How are you supposed to win anything when you are perpetually getting sucked into your own black hole?

Lost Thought 00: Hey now, FO gives them a 0.03% chance to win the super bowl, so anything's possible

Vegas has them at 150-1 to win the Super Bowl. At least they're ahead of Minnesota (180-1) and Jacksonville (250-1).

/Denver is the current favorite at 6-1

As a Raiders homer i could see them going 8-8 this year. maybe 9-7 if the ball boiunces just right for them. More than that? Playoffs? Too soon to hope that big yet.

I'm a Gentile Vikings fan myself, so take it with a grain of salt, but I'm not convinced that either is offensive.

The Raiders are not winning and they have not taken any measurable strides to start winning now. The Israelis are not currently at peace and are not taking measurable strides to start being at peace.

Seems legit.

The dead money is gone. This is the first year the Raiders can pay for actual players since ~2002. Schaub is being placed at the head of a team that people expect to fail. If the Raiders do so much as break .500, he's got a shot a comeback PotY

It is kind of their policy to get all of the winning out of the way before the regular season starts.

Sure, they are in "win now" mode. Not "win after the season starts" mode.

You paid any attention to the rest of the division lately?

It's the League, and anything's possible... but that will be a tough trudge. Who's your OOC?

Oh. NFC West. Huh. That doesn't do many favors, really.

Rams and Cardinals are winnable. So are the three other last place AFC teams. All they have to do is win half the division games after that for 8-8. It could happen.

That feeling- the one you're having right now? That hope, that you're trying to temper with realism?

That's the best part of being an NFL fan. Because fans of all 32 teams are looking at the season to come, and 31 of them are thinking "well, this season's going to be better".

Last year? That doesn't matter anymore. Your team either had some injuries, or brought in some new free agents, or maybe even a new coach (and look at what Andy Reid did last year in KC if you don't think it matters!), and that voice in your head is going "8-8 is totally doable. 9-7 probably gets us in the playoffs, and then... who knows?"

Or, if your team was a playoff team last year... then, y'know, a few bounces go a different way, and I'm not saying they're a lock for the Lombardi...

2014-07-24 04:57:11 PM
Of course they are in "win now" mode.  When the season starts they are going to be in "hysterical lopsided losses" mode with a healthy selection of "insane coaching decision" mode and the omnipresent "I honestly think the front office personnel are missing a chromosome or two" mode.

As a Steeler fan, I enjoy seeing the Raiders fail.

As a Penn State fan, I want to see Matt McGloin win the Super Bowl, MVP, and throw a brazillion touchdowns.

I think McGloin deserves it more so I'll cheer for him when he plays.

Vegas has the O/U on wins at 5.5. I took the over. Seven is possible. More wins than that, I think, would be difficult considering the schedule.

Every season there is one team that nobody expects to be competitive challenge for a playoff spot. Why not Oakland? The O-Line looks good, so the team should rush effectively. The defense is almost certainly going to be much better and get more pressure. A couple of good bounces, catching a good team on a week they're beatable and playing consistent, mistake-free football...that'll get you somewhere. Regardless, it will be interesting. This is without a doubt the best assembly of football players the Raiders have put on the field in several years.

2011 Colts?

Plenty of teams go into a season looking toward future seasons. They usually use the term "rebuilding year".

When teams say something like they are in a "win now" year it means their team is going to be crap in a few years (in the NFL that usually means the team is hitting the salary cap and a bunch of good young players are going to be lost hurting the team badly) and they are expecting to lose in the future.

Yeah, that's the beauty of the NFL.  There's always a dark horse team that makes it into the playoffs.
