Don't worry he wouldn't have gained more than a point in each of those games (FFB wise that is).

/would have dropped (or traded) Ray Rice this year even without the issues he started/finished

Didn't Pryor get 5 games for selling his stuff in college or something?

Anyway, let's check out the reactions of the two big networks that cover the NFL -

Also just learned that Shawn Merriman (Mr. Beat up Myspace Drunken Dwarf Slut Tila Tequila) was on NFL Network talking about how the NFL came down hard on Rice.

Pretty much what I expected.

First time offense, no prior history, no drugs, no jail time. Two games is relatively standard in that situation.

If it weren't for the fact that there was video of the aftermath, this would not have been a surprise to anyone.

(Note, this is not condoning or excusing his actions - there is no excuse.)

He did, but part of the reason that was 5 games is because he had an active 5 game suspension from the NCAA. The NFL wanted to keep relations with the NCAA happy and not encourage players jumping punishments by declaring early for the draft.

While I would like to see a stricter punishment you do have to remember there is video from the elevator that the Nfl has seen and we haven't. A hypothetical, what if she was swinging a knife at him?

What would everyone's reaction be if be accused/investigated of a crime be a suspendable offense? Should kapernick sit out a few games? He was investigated for sexual assault.

Also, anyone pointing out drug suspensions should know this is what the NFLPA bargained for. If you sign a contract saying you won't smoke weed then you can't smoke weed and still be employed there. Gordon and Blackmon are morons.

It's more that Gordon has a long history of violations and lack of any indication that he's remorseful.

What Rice did was awful, but at least he didn't go out and get arrested a month ago for getting into a bar fight or something.

I was at M&T last season for Packers vs Ravens.

A) Too late, already sausage fest
B) 2nd rudest fans behind Philly
C) Nice stadium but some of the parking is in a shiatty neighborhood. Our lot was surrounded by a 12 foot chain fence and topped with barbed wire.

He will have no criminal record after the diversionary program, and if he hadn't been accepted into that the state already announced they'd accept a no-jail-time plea. Hey look, the same breathless false equivalency Deadspin made this morning! Congratulations to both of you on your ability to liken apples to oranges.

You guys remember the Nigel Bethel drama? You should, it's only been three weeks...the guy that was kicked off Texas Tech for hitting a woman? And then reinstated immediately once evidence was shown? Funny how the whole world's perception changes when they finally have, you know, information. Yet here you guys go making massive assumptions.

There is no suspension for the first positive test/missed test for drugs of abuse. You are entered into the NFL drug program. The 2nd offense is a 4-gamer. The 3rd is is the whammy. Anywhere from 8 games to a full season.

At worse she would have used a shoe.  Taking a swing at a drunk woman ALWAYS makes you the bad guy no matter what the circumstances are even if she did use a shoe to swing at him.

The knife was a hypothetical. But nobody knows what happened in the elevator. If it turns out she hit hit him on the shoulder once and he starts throwing haymakers I would expect he wouldn't be playin this year. But why if she keeps hitting scratching him and he tries to push her away multiple times before throwing one punch to keep her away? It'll be interesting to see what comes from this

Fair enough, I retract my statement.

And as far as not having the whole story...I am having a hard time imagining a situation where Ray Rice couldn't avoid making his fiance unconscious.  He has such a tremendous physical advantage, it seems he should have been able to take less drastic methods, but it is true I have not seen the footage.

I suppose if she choked herself out, or banged her head against a wall until she KO'd herself he would be blameless, but if that were the case there wouldn't even be a two game suspension...sooooo, we know he did something bad because he was punished, and we know the end result was an unconscious fiance...but we don't know the details of how she ended up there.  I guess I am just having a hard time thinking of anything that would warrant that small of a punishment, but still require any punitive action at all, given the severe end result.

And yes, Rice is a 1st time offender, and it does make sense for the league to give players some leeway who have been model employees up to that point... It just seems unfair that the punishment for violent offences can be relatively light compared to a two time pot smoker.  I guess I *understand*, I just don't like it...

Yes he would, because the NFL caters to inflated senses of male self worth. It's their primary selling point. The Ray Rice's of the world are their core demographic

"Conduct detrimental to the league" is a catch-all reason. He may very well have done nothing [provable] (I doubt it, as he did plead out to avoid trial), and still catch punishment from the league simply for bringing negative attention to himself and therefore the NFL. see: Ben Rapethlisberger

I know everyone wants to grind their particular axe here, whether it's because this guy plays for a team you don't like, or plays a sport you don't like, or you are still butthurt over deserved punishment the commissioner gave your most favoritist team, but maybe get out into the real world sometime and get a little perspective.

Head over to your local DV court sometime and watch a few proceedings. You'll see women beaten a lot worse than that and see their significant others, particularly if they're first time offenders like Rice, given anger management classes and a dozen hours of counseling. Maybe a couple grand in legal bills.

But this punishment isn't harsh enough! He's only losing two game checks, what's that barely a few hundred thousand! We should all be so mad about this, except his wife who apparently wasn't that upset.

I know, don't even bother. Please save your battered woman syndrome posts...she's a poor delicate flower who is incapable of making her own choices so we have to protect her! She's a battered woman, so more suspension for Rice would definitely fix that, I guess? She'd be cured of her syndrome then and leave him?

Or maybe not and most of you don't really give a shiat about her and just want to grind your ax over whatever it is about the NFL or Goodell or Rice that hurts your butts.

DV is wrong. Always. But it's not a capital offense. He's been punished legally (I think? Maybe case still pending) and now by his profession far in excess of what the average drunk wife beater would be, who generally stroll right back out of court to their place of work.

I'm guessing he is using hyperbole by stating that Rousey might be able to inflict some damage on an NFL RB while drunk.
Not that I must hate women if I'm pointing out that the average, not trained for hand to hand combat, woman has little to no chance of knocking out an NFL RB who take helmets to the head on a weekly basis as part of their job.

At least that's the way I took the statement.  Even so I doubt a drunken Rousey would be able to knock on Ray Rice in a punch.  She's around 60kg. Ray Rice is around 96kg.  A nearly 40kg weight difference is not something that's easily over come when both sides are fit.  Rice's wife weighs even less and is not a trained fighter.  There's a reason why there are weight classes in organized fighting.

I don't think the woman in the video was the leading female MMA fighter in the world, nor did he say it could 'never' happen, but please keep going. Random drunk chick vs. NFL RB, I don't think there have been studies on this but I wouldn't be too worried for my physical safety if I was Rice, just pissed off.

The only situation I could see is if she was trying to injure or choke him, and he hit her to escape and she hit her head in the elevator. The suspension, therefore, would be for being in the situation, rather than the outcome (similar to Roethlisberger).

She is more known for her arm-bars than striking ability...just to be pedantic.  Although, being 100% honest, I would probably still bet a lot of money on Rice in a Rice vs. Rousey MMA match...overwhelming size and strength go a long way in that sport, and Rice's arm strength would likely totally negate Rousey's ability to bar his arm up, plus Rice is still an athlete in tip-top shape who plays a brutal contact sport, not some random dude.

Is that a joke? Ridiculous.

But don't smoke pot or you are done for the year.

/Okay, only 4 games if it is a first offense for pot.
/Remember kid's, smoking weed is twice as bad as knocking your girlfriend out cold in anger

There is no suspension for the first positive test/missed test for drugs of abuse. You are entered into the NFL drug program. The 2nd offense is a 4-gamer. The 3rd is is the whammy. Anywhere from 8 games to a full season.

The only situation I could see is if she was trying to injure or choke him, and he hit her to escape and she hit her head in the elevator. The suspension, therefore, would be for being in the situation, rather t ...

I guess that makes sense...along those same lines, if she was going ballistic just swinging nonstop going crazy, and he shoved her away and her head hit the side...I guess that would qualify as unintentional and in self defense.  Damn...now I really want to see that video though...

Stop using words you don't understand.

The claim was made that a woman could never pack enough punch to hurt a man. If you're claiming that isn't misogynistic, then it's certain that *one* of us doesn't understand the term.

No. Actual quote-so how much power can a drunk woman pack behind a punch vs. an NFL RB?

this compares punching power between a drunk woman vs. an NFL running back. Now I know you can find a handful of examples on the planet of just such a thing, but that doesn't exactly debunk the statement.

And if you think saying men are generally more physically strong than a woman is misogynistic, well, then...

Stop using words you don't understand.

Dont expect him to remember this later, He is higher than a kite.

/Don't even smoke these days
//But don't care if people do

You said you retracted it. but you retracted it the way that idiot sports radio dude in Boston apologised to Erin Andrews. OOOO loooka me i retract my statement 6that is undeniably wrong then I'll restate everything i said just adding that he was caught twice. Im an attention whore for social justice who doesnt have clue farking one about NFL CBAs or player suspension processes. Good retraction there
