FTA:  CEF says Protect Portland Children is a shadow group run by atheists who seek to dismantle Christian outreach. [...] One prominent local pastor, Rev. Chuck Currie, wrote on our Facebook page:

"As a minister in the United Church of Christ, I have deep concerns about the Good News Club and the message it spreads. I appreciate your work."

Apply ice to burned area, CEF.  Maybe pastor Chuck has some in the rectory fridge.

You have to indoctrinate children into religious ideology when they're young.  Once they hit a certain age, they start to not believe in things like an omnipotent invisible triple sky god that you communicate with telepathically.

Local pagan groups should start converting Christians to heathen gods. I'll bet our parties are way more fun!

Free daycare? The very poor will send their kids, this approach isn't new.

TFA has an odd angle on the story, as if the group isn't OK but would be if only their message were more in line with mainstream proselytizing better tailored to kids.

They don't want to offend anyone.

We don't convert anybody because God is the one who is in the business of converting. if a child is going to place their faith in christ, that's between them and God

Oh fark you.

Tell me again about liberal indoctrination and the gay agenda and such.

As of Wednesday evening, the group had close to 800 "likes."

I am in favor of arming all Portland kids with Super Soakers. That'll take care of it.

Sounds like your standard Christian kids summer "bible school" thing. Don't they have these everywhere all summer long?

"You're a sinner and you're going to burn in Hell unless God has chosen to save you in particular while not saving countless others based on His own unfathomable reasons"
Updated for Calvinism.

On the plus side, maybe we'll get a funny skit on Portlandia next year out of this.

Yeah, it looks like the difference is that most Vacation Bible Schools are situations where you take your kids to them.  These guys are finding places where kids hang out and preaching at them.

Atheist here. Really don't see what anyone is upset about. Pretty standard stuff.

People HATE that I've taught the monsters logic and allowed them to make up their own minds.

/"Why are you an atheist?" is the hateful question I've been asked. My stock answer has now become, "Because I have a brain - and I use it."

Cool - where do I donate?

Religious evangelists of all shapes and sizes are unmitigated scum and desperately need dismantling.

I think they are up for a Lifetime Achievement Award this year.

Hey kids, have you tried atheism?  You can sleep in on weekends, there are no meetings, and we think you're probably just fine already.  Easier message for those who want to go down and counter these guys.

This is repugnant behavior.
Leave children alone: They don't need your propaganda.
And God doesn't need used car salesmen. The hard sell always indicates an inferior product.

Back in my fundie days, I used to go on short missions trips to a few of the outer suburbs of Boston; most of the stuff we did was pretty innocuous, and a lot of our efforts were focused on neighborly things like doing yard work for people in the neighborhood of our host church. However, we also did put on a program for kids that occasionally involved hell threats. It still weighs on my conscience pretty heavily, and I do hope most of those kids avoided getting sucked in.

My point is, subby has been living under a rock if he thinks that CEF is the only Christian group that targets kids on the sly, or that CEF is a Portland thing.

2014-07-24 03:05:48 PM
you know what they got their knickers in a twist over?  Indoctrinate that child into their particular denomination and he/she might grow up and tithe that denomination.
Lost their 10% or more
It's all about the money, honey.

FTFA:  "Parents should know that out-of-state evangelical fundamentalists are in the Portland area..."

Am I the only one who finds it funny that, in addition to warning them these guys are evangelical fundamentalists, they also wanted people to know they're from out-of-state?

I like to sip the Oregon Kool-aid every now and then (due to the fact it tastes like beer) but I doubt such horrors could only be comprehended if one understands this  group is from out of state.

/then again, I don't live there

What? Just sounds like another rational religious cult group going about indoctrinating recruiting followers so they can make more $ and have more power save them. You make it sound like something will could go wrong...

This really isn't just in Portland, I am in Ohio and dipshiats have tried this with my son and daughter. These shiat heels are everywhere and have no respect for others.

2014-07-24 03:09:36 PM
These people are worse than the WBC. Aggressively recruiting grade school age kids is worse than some dbags holding offensive signs.

2014-07-24 03:09:42 PM
Goddamnit. Nothing good ever comes out of Portland.

NOTHING.

2014-07-24 03:10:32 PM
Anyone else get the impression they interviewed the evangelican chick by email and left all the typos in on purpose?  "minitry"?  Utterly failing to capitalise the name of your religion or the person it's named after?

Then there was this:
"At a park on Wednesday, the group laid out a tarp for children. A pair of volunteers led a small group of kids through Bible verses and songs that praised a Christian god "

I thought the whole schtick was that there's only one (subdivided into three but not really).

2014-07-24 03:10:39 PM
convert them from being Portlanders?

The conquistadors take that prize because you know they actually killed and enslaved people in the name of Christianity. That is a bit worse than WBC just being general dickheads to everyone.

2014-07-24 03:14:31 PM
Doesn't this sort of brainwashing, at some point, constitute harm to children from which they should protected by law?

I mean, at that age they're so open to suggestion that you can generally get them to believe anything, and they lack the critical thinking to evaluate it.  Once the lessons are internalized, they often lose the ability to question it, and damage like "homosexuals are evil" or "kill the jews" are now fundamental parts of their long term thought patterns.

Obviously this stuff can be deeply damaging.

What I'm saying is, shouldn't we ensure that children are not exposed to religion until they're old enough to handle it, when it won't damage their developing mental state, in the same way that we protect them from drugs, tobacco, and alcohol?

/ suggestion made half in jest

Ow! That was my feelings!: These people are worse than the WBC. Aggressively recruiting grade school age kids is worse than some dbags holding offensive signs.

quite a few of those wbc dbags were/are kids, so it's really comparing Apples to Oranges (when both fruits have been injected with psychotropic brainwashing drugs).

It just further tickles the "they're outsiders, they're not one of us" part of the brain.  Makes them a greater threat than they already were.
