Seriously. I think we should just build a cold war shelter and live in it forever.

Well, at least I'm not surprised to hear about a central African airliner falling out of the air. Goat probably ate the wiring.

Despite all these plane crashes, more people have died in auto accidents this year.

2014-07-24 07:16:11 AM
Oh man.

I've made that flight. Crossing the Sahara takes *forever*, and your only thought the whole time is 'Jesus, it would be a long damn walk to anywhere'.

Why do they wait until after it's supposed to have landed to tell everyone they've lost contact?  Shouldn't that be something they make known right away, so people can, you know, LOOK for it?

If you say it out loud, over and over, it sounds like the music from some 1970s porno.

Why limit it to people?

Despite all these plane crashes and car accidents, do you know how many ants have been senselessly slaughtered by people stepping on them?

wildcardjack: ILoveBurritos: Despite all these plane crashes, more people have died in auto accidents this year.

Yep, one giant clown car. We got all of the auto fatalities out of the way at once and decided to let the planes kill people off incrementally this year.

Wow, imagine the new death toll when they add all the ants and bacteria to the plane crashes too!

I hope you're not going to take a shower, submitter, since around 6000 Americans die every year in slip and fall incidents at home, the overwhelming majority of them in the bathroom.

Ambivalence: Am I the only one surprised that Algeria has a national airline?

FTA: Flight AH 5017 had 110 passengers and six crew on board, Spanish airline Swiftair, which owns the plane, said. And also:   The plane is operated by Air Algerie and chartered from Swiftair

This wasn't even their plane, but a plane chartered from a Spanish company.  A lot of countries have national airlines.  It's a prestige symbol, and gives corrupt bureaucrats huge piles of money to skim off of.

Shot down after a passenger started coughing blood, according to sources.

Of course, because people spend far more time in cars than planes, once you adjust for time spent in each vehicle, planes aren't any safer than cars.

I'm sure all those Russian anti-aircraft batteries being sold on the black market by the Russian mafia have nothing whatsoever to do with this ...

Walker: In other news there's a country called "Burkina Faso"

Yes... formerly the "Republic of Upper Volta," for those who haven't been paying attention for the 30 years since it was renamed to "Burkina Faso."

Anyway, we should have seen this coming, after Putin annexed eastern Mali.

http://www.dailysabah.com/africa/2014/07/24/air-algerie-loses-contact - with-plane-after-takeoff

"Ougadougou is in a nearly straight line south of Algiers, passing over Mali where unrest continues in the north.
However, a senior French official said it was unlikely that fighters in Mali had weaponry that could shoot down a plane.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because she was not authorized to speak for attribution, said the fighters have shoulder-fired weapons which could not hit an aircraft at cruising altitude."

Hopefully not copycat killers.

Obviously due to climate change there is no longer enough lift in the air for planes to fly.

I blame Obama.

[i131.photobucket.com image 800x450]

While I'm as big a fan of the M.S. Type N as any WWI  Armée de l'Air aficionado, it's never acceptable to dismantle a twin-boom cargo plane in this manner.

/Fun fact - the B-25J they used to film most of the aerial shots was the Mitchell they used in the Mike Nichols adaptation of Catch-22.
//And Frank Tallman, the famous stunt pilot who flew the Mitchell for both movies, did so with one leg.  He maintained a complete FAA cert despite being an amputee.

2014-07-24 07:39:30 AM
And thus, World War Z began...

2014-07-24 07:41:11 AM
An unnamed Air Algerie company source, speaking to AFP news agency, said: "The plane was not far from the Algerian frontier when the crew was asked to make a detour because of poor visibility and to prevent the risk of collision with another aircraft on the Algiers-Bamako route."

The fark?
