Link that actually says what's up, and how (and is linked in the article) - the history on the tree

And also, Tree of 40 Fruit dot com

Great, now I want a tree. Where am I going to put a tree?

Your move, creationists.

Great, now let's get one to produce all those types of fruit from a single seed.

It's like attaching a penis (or several) to your arm. You don't suddenly start producing kids with a bunch of dicks on their arms.

Why don't they use an original picture rather than one photoshopped to hell and back?

Hmm... I want one.

Even the original site uses that picture. It is the only picture of the tree I can find. GIS brings up a million versions of that one picture but no other pictures of the tree.

What I mean is, that's the only "picture" of the tree. The only one.

Notice that this is all stone fruits. Although you can do this with any trees that are close enough related, it is hard to do and unusual. Also I'm not sure what the fruits would be like - his site says it fruits but he doesn't say if the fruits are 1/16" thick sour tasting disappointments or not.

Now if he'd managed to graft a lemon onto a blackberry cane onto a pear stump I'd be even more impressed.

Also it would violate everything we know about how plants work.

Maybe, but I am not sure it's the tree that's been shopped (color-wise, anyway); he may have simply (stupidly) done something to bring the tree "out" and dull the rest of the scene.

"Each unique Tree of 40 Fruit [so multiple trees, but only the one pic.-Ed.] grows over forty different types of stone fruit including peaches, plums, apricots, nectarines, cherries, and almonds. Sculpted through the process of grafting, the Tree of 40 Fruit blossom in variegated tones of pink, crimson and white in spring, and in summer bear a multitude of fruit."

*shrug*

Reminds me of my grandpa whom had an apple tree in his back yard with 4 or 5 different varieties on it.

Yeah, he's got pictures of it in his yard, not on some loft balcony.  I also think he might have had it shopped because the different fruits bloom at different times so most of the time the tree is kind of ugly.  Any way, in his TED talk he looked a fool but still a cool concept.

Colors aside, that tree is obviously 'shopped onto that background. The shadows are fake, the box is fake, it's all fake. And this is the only picture...

It might be one of those high dynamic range (HDR) photos, that push the lights and darks to the extremes of the color gamut. Lots of cameras can do that at the touch of a button. It has its uses, but most of the time it just makes the photo look like shiat, or faked even though no other alteration was made.

I think it is actually a mockup, e.g. here for other "drawings".

That's an interesting hypothesis, but I don't think that's it. HDR photos often look unreal but they look more real than this one. Look at the trunk's shadow angle vs the box's shadow angle.

It's not too too difficult when it comes to citrus.  My grandparents on my mother's side lived on land that used to be a citrus orchard, so the backyard had several citrus trees: grapefruit, lemon, and orange.  One of the lemon trees was destroyed in some manner I forget (lightning strike I think) but one of the major branches was salvageable, so grandaddy cut it off, cut a matching area on a nearby grapefruit tree, and grafted it on.  By the time I was born the tree was healthy and you could hardly tell it was a graft unless someone pointed it out.  Well that and the one branch had way smaller fruit on it.  From what I remember the lemons from that branch had a rather unique flavor too.

We have a couple of those that a local nursery made. They fruit well.

The resolution of the tree and the surroundings are different as well.

Oh sure, everyone loves the Tree of Forty Fruits but when I try to make the Cow of Forty Steaks by sewing together several dozen different ungulates, the only recognition I get from the SPCA. Who, I might add, had me arrested for cruel and inhumane experiments.
