I am still depressed by how frothy-at-the-mouth some Republicans got over Michelle Obama's audacity in suggesting kids eat right and exercise.

Clearly you don't understand the nature of freedom.

I just have this mental image of parents stuffing yeast rolls in their faces while staring hatefully at a picture of Michelle Obama and screaming ROLL ROLLS!

I'm not sure about the weight of kids on average when I was 8 or so but it does seem to me that we weighed less then.  That isn't scientific of course but that is my impression.

Perhaps the US reached "peak blubber".

He was "the fat one".

Don't get me wrong, I don't think he'd be called thin by 21st Century standards but he wouldn't stand out as being the fat one either.

Pretty much this. Isn't there some ceiling at which so many are so fat that it's actually difficult for there to be more fatness?

As into gardening as he is, I bet he gets enough exercise.

I've noticed it too at my children's school.  They're aren't that many fat kids.

Now fat parents, that is a different story.  Fairly certain those kids might be doomed.

I like the First Lady, but yeah, this is a long term trend.

But getting all spittle flecked because she decided to champion kid's health and nutrition?

No one got pissed with Laura was all about reading, but I guess they got pissed about Hillary doing something besides watching Bill cheat on her.

I don't remember the Barbara's goals as First Lady, but Nancy was all anti-drug, and nary a peep.

I don't have kids, but I have a bunch of cousins who have kids born in the past 12 years.  All my cousins are thin/healthy and always have been.  They are physically active people who eat healthy foods.  I should clarify that I'm counting my cousins on both sides and my husband's cousins so we are not all related by blood or genetics.

What I have noticed is that most the kids have started to look a little chubby by around 8 years old.  None of them are obese or even close to it, but if they were that size when I was a kid, they would probably be considered a little on the tubby side.  It's really interesting because all of them have healthy parents who try to feed them healthy food and they all play sports or are into outdoorsy things.  None are into video games (yet at least) so it's not like they sit around indoors all the time.

It's just interesting to observe and for me it's indicative of the fact that it isn't a simple reason of kids being fat, lazy slobs these days.  I'm glad that the numbers are going down, but it is alarming what we've allowed to happen to our society.

I feel like the phrase 'critical mass' should have been used somewhere in that article.
