FTFA: Mass murderer Anders Behring Breivik, who killed 77 people in Norway in 2011, now renounces violence, his lawyer says.

The comments came on the third anniversary of Norway's bloodiest massacre since the end of World War II.

On June 22, 2011 Breivik killed eight people with a bomb near a building which housed the left-wing government in Oslo, and then opened fire on a Labour Youth camp on the island of Utoeya, killing 69 people - most of them teenagers.

Wait, is that a cell or a dorm room?

That's nicer than a monastic cell, I can tell you.  Nicer than my college dorms, too.

Breivik, 35, "has now become very clear that he doesn't support violence and that he doesn't encourage others to carry out violent acts," his lawyer Tor Jordet told local media on Tuesday.

I wonder - how does it feel for a lawyer to deliver shiat like this?  He has to know that this guy is still a danger to society.  There's no way he's changed a damn thing.  And yet, the lawyer has to deliver this message and try to get him out of jail at every opportunity.  I don't know how they do it.

Very nice to hear. Now weld the door shut on this defect's cell, and pass in meal trays until it stops eating, and erase every record of it's name afterward.

While it seems like he likely suffers from some pretty heavy duty mental illness, even with meds and therapy having that big of a turnaround inside of three years is pretty surprising.

Norway allows him to remain locked up for 21 years, but after that his continued incarceration depends on if he's determined to be a danger to society.  If he's playing the long game, he's got an early start.

It's not a big turnaround. He probably still hates Muslims and foreigners of the wrong species.

What he's said, and through a lawyer*, is violence is an appropriate means to ones ends.

It could very well be he's not in the LEAST biatchanged but just discovered his violent actions were actually counterproductive to his goals. Also, most people mellow out after about age 30. There's a reason armies all over the world contain mostly young men 15-25 as the general infantry.

*Teachers teach. Drivers drive. Say "lawyer" aloud in an English accent.

doglover: violence is an appropriate means to ones ends.

er, Violence is not.

Anyway, it's nice to see Norway's jails actually trying to rehabilitate people instead of just feeding the for-profit system. Even monsters like this guy get a second chance of sorts. Personally I'd want him serving agriculture (as fertilizer) but that's me.

Norway beats the US in prison systems. Hands farking down.

2014-07-22 11:53:22 PM
Now why would he say something like that I wonder?

The right-wing extremist is serving 21 years in prison - the maximum sentence in Norway - which could be extended indefinitely as long as he is still considered a threat to society.

Ah yes, there it is.

Isn't there some way we can turn this conversation into a referendum on the second amendment?  C'mon, nearly ten posts in and no one has mentioned Ted Nugent or Columbine yet.

For most offenders, I agree that we should be trying to transform them and turn them into productive citizens.

This guy? He deliberately murdered over 70 people and was hoping for more. Coming from someone who generally opposes the death penalty... fark him, off with his murderous farking head.

2014-07-23 12:34:00 AM
I am sure Norway's jails are nice.
Norwegians, on the other hand, can be quite fierce, and may not be so forgiving of someone who wacked 70 kids.
He may be safer in prison.

Heck, if he's rehabilitated, let him out now. Let's see how it goes.

If those kids had guns, fewer people would have died.

2014-07-23 12:36:43 AM
He's lying and probably is plotting to commit another massacre as soon as he is released, if they are stupid enough to let him go free.

2014-07-23 12:39:20 AM
And hopefully angry Norwegians who can get in range of him have not.

2014-07-23 12:39:22 AM
At the time of the massacre, Breivik said his actions were "cruel but necessary" to save Europe from Islam and multiculturalism.

Necessary? Yeah, great renounciation there.

How about no?  We have to stop these cretins from breeding.

Like Van der Sloot. Yup, he got to breed in prison. Isn't that nice? His highly defective genetics will live on because people are soft and care about the feelings of murderers.

"Awww, poor double-murderer's balls are blue! Let's get him laid."   [!!!!] [WTF??!]

Or worse: "Aww, only I can see the scared little boy inside...also, he's a REAL bad boy! *swoon*"

Aren't you being a little hard on him?  Sure, he went for the quick buck with the "Fast and the Furious" movies but a lot of people forget how good he was in "The Chronicles of Riddick."  And he was outstanding in "Saving Private Ryan."

I think you need to rethink your position.

Norwegian years are longer and time is all f*cked up over there. They're still wearing parachute pants for Christ's sake. They keep children in cardboard boxes.

I remember hearing one of the Scandinavian countries has a prison skeet-shooting club. I don't mean in the "hur-hur prison rape" sense. I mean the kind with shotguns. In jail.

Absolutely. Comprehension fail.

Still. Guy who's responsible for many deaths changing his entire outlook after three years? Seems legit.

I think you're right, and from what I've heard, their loosed axe murderers have not re-offended.

However, the killer in question strikes me as the type that would never change.

If I recall, the Norwegian people actively went out of their way to AVOID the kind of reaction you think they would have. Not every culture on the planet is as revenge-happy as America.

It is amazing what you can do with a small relatively cohesive society with unlimited oil money to pay for things and a justice system that only has to cope with 4,000 prisoners.  Here is another article on the prisons:  http://www.theguardian.com/society/2013/feb/25/norwegian-prison-inmat e s-treated-like-people

I don't believe him or his lawyer about his change in his beliefs.  He needs to personally apologize to the families of every child and adult he murdered and beg for their forgiveness each and every day for the remainder of his life.  Living in his resort like conditions for the remainder of his life is the least he could do.  If he is truly remorseful and has changed, and whatever deity he believes in is truly forgiving, he may end up in a nicer section of hell when he finally dies.

What dookdookdook said is a little hyperbole, but also not far off. Our prisons exist solely to contain and punish, and in too many cases, for profit.

Sitting in jail, you get bored and you think of yourself as a celebrity and a bit of an expert on the topic, and you are now a bit detached by time from the horrors you committed, so you start to make little pronouncements.   Give the world your wisdom.

Best thing is to drop his opinions in a bin and don't publish them at all.
