At A Memorial? Just Don't Do 'Duck Face'

Sage advice for when you're not at a memorial, too.

It might be OK to ask somebody to take a picture of you not doing a stupid pose in front of a monument, but a "selfie" jumps the line over into tacky territory.

In fact, no one particularly gives a shiat about this kind of behavior at places that are literally sacred. It's easy to GIS selfies at Uluru or the Vatican or Borobudur which have spurred exactly zero international controversy.

This isn't about "sacred," it's about having some farking sense of history or empathy. Or the slightest bit of common farking sense about how to respond when things start to blow up.

It's not that hard to believe considering how ubiquitous the social media photos have become. Miley Cyrus took one from a hospital bed, Ellen DeGeneres did it at the Oscars and, even though his finger wasn't on the trigger, President Obama took one at a funeral.

If his finger wasn't "on the trigger" then it wasn't a "selfie", you ignorant Yahoo dumbass.

My general rule is it's a rare person that remembers what things were like five years ago. But what I really mean is people seem unable to extrapolate from anything more than five years in the past.

Also at least with 911 nothing architecturally was lost. I'm thinking every year we have old clapped out jetliners that need to be scrapped. And a huge stock of utterly shabby real estate from the 60-70's. Plus hundreds of pissed off followers of Muhammad. Anyone getting my drift here?

Are....are you suggesting we turn 9/11 into Uncle Mahmoud's Crazy Jihad Weekend and invite radical muslims to crash used-up 737s into ugly old buildings that we've surreptitiously evacuated, or at least filled with people who do things like take selfies at sites venerating the dead?

Christ... depending on who you ask, either a million or million and a half people end up going into the crisper.  I cannot even fathom how many people that is... our local stadium can handle 80,000 people and that is a hell of a lot.  Biggest outdoor shows i've seen where 500,000 people show up is unbelievable - and that's still not even close to the death toll from that place.

Sacred indeed.  I hope someone gets punched in the face hard for taking a selfie.  I'm not even jewish, but you gotta respect the area.

I'm planning a visit to Germany. My host told me explicitly "If you want to see Auschwitz or any of the other camps, you're on your own for that one." I've never visited it personally, but from what I've heard..I can see "sacred ground" being used to describe it. A bit hyperbolic, maybe, but the sentiment is understandable.

Well I'm sure in your mind, it really supports your argument to try tossing a flimsy personal attack rather than answer my simple question and strengthen your explanation.
