I ran into him in the French Quarter, many years ago. I was hungover and tried to say something profound and failed miserably.
He kissed my hand with such charm that it made my panties moist.

I went to one of his book signings and felt that same charisma.

I'll never forgive him for that overplayed duet that he did with Carlos Santana. "Smooth," my ass.

Had to go to wikipedia to look up who this was (I will admit I have not read enough books in the last 10-15 years).  Apparently there's some debate about whether this is his 78th or 82nd birthday.
While a great many sources easily found in Google list his birthyear as 1936, there was at least one edit by someone claiming to be his assistant who corrected it to 1932, and when he was on "Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me" on NPR in 2010 he gave his age then as 77.

I really enjoyed Robbins, but couldn't stand Brautigan. They're similar in some aspects, but Robbins seems far easier to read.

Yes - that's the one.  Didn't much care for _Still Life With Woodpecker_, though.

Skinny Legs and All is all I need to know about Israel & Palestine.

Also I met him about a year ago and was confused by the old man.

Robbins is a singular talent.  Fierce Invalids Home from Hot Climates begins with the greatest 5 paragraphs written in the English language.

Brautigan is shiat. I can drop acid and write bullshiat for hours too.

Not a bad analogy. Read an old RS interview a few weeks back.

Good for him for being successful but geeze that stuff seems aimed at 17 year old hippies from the late 60s.
He tries too hard to be cute/profound/counter culture for my taste.
Finally, he's 82?!?!? WTF. Where has the time gone?

Even Cowgirls Get the Blues is easily Robbins' worst book except for some of his recent stuff.

I'm the first to say "Jitterbug Perfume" is his best? Y'all are crazy.

I loved him in college, haven't liked his newer stuff as much. I don't know if that's more a reflection on him or me. Might have to dig one of the old ones out and give it a whirl.

/happy birthday Tom

He's the writer that taught me there are two types of people in the world: the type that think there are two types of people and those who know better.

When I met him last year (omg he's SO OLD) I told him I couldn't enjoy his books when I was depressed and they made me mad then. He didn't have any witty repartee at all.
