Is it just me or is it weird how the article uses dollars and makes a point that the asshole was British, when the story apparently all took place in the UK?

She should have called the police when he got out the ladder (trespassing), instead of waiting for him to demand payment.

It saddens my heart to see yet another example of job crushing government regulations preventing a man with the same entrepreneurial spirit that made our nation great from succeeding. Shame on you England.

I have an extremely wealth old bag of a neighbor who does shiat like this all the time.

She has some service done and at the end of it says it was not done right or she never agreed to pay them, and sends them packing.

She asked me the other day why none of the kids in the hood would not cut her grass.

My grandmother served on the jury for a man who got 9 years for stealing a danish from the gas station valued at $1.89. Then we wonder why our prisons are overcrowded...

I offered a 28 year old, living with his mom and dad, always biatching about not having money dude $100 to clean my gutters.  3 weeks later the answer was "I'll get to it."

I mentioned it to someone a few years younger than him, who lives on his own and works his ass off at anything thrown his way, and he said "I can be there tomorrow."

Still shaking my head at the slacker.  It was an hour of work.

Why the "Strange" tag?  People who abuse the elderly should go to jail.  Now he can experience what it's like to have his gutters cleaned after he said no.

When I was a kid there was this old lady with a massive yard--something like 3 acres. I used to mow that sucker for $10, using a push mower. It would take me all day--dawn to nearly evening. I'd been doing it all summer, then one day she suddenly decided it wasn't short enough, and was quite upset with me.
I went home and told my Dad. He told me I was an idiot--it was costing me $10 in gas alone (something I wasn't considering as it was coming from a farm tank) and I wasn't making any money. I went back in two weeks and told her it would be $20 and she flipped out.

I learned alot that day. Economics and that people are dicks.

It's usually because of the six-time losers who get "sent to prison for stealing a danish" after their previous convictions for all of the other crap they did in the past - they're going back to prison for a probation violation, not the $1.89.

Most people convicted of petty theft for the first time don't even get sent to jail - it's usually a fine and probation.

Good lord, why not just execute them? Their lives are effectively ruined now anyway.

Stealing a danish is worse than bilking an old hag out of $50, apparently by a factor of 3.

I think it's due to the prison sentence. What are the odds that this 88 year old woman was just confused? Could this whole thing have been a misunderstanding? Would a night in jail have cooled everyone down?

3 years is a long god damn time, and if the U.K. is anything like the U.S.A. then his arrest just ruined his ability to hold a normal job.

And they probably aren't allowed to tell the jury about his past crimes.  I know when I was on a jury many years ago, we were told nothing about the defendant's past and did not hang around afterwards for sentencing.

From another version of the story:
"Larkman, who had previous convictions for similar offences, was spotted nearby and arrested just hours later."

This smells like shenanagins, she probably left off some detail like he was on parole and the conviction was cause for his parole to be revoked.

And women that murder their children get less time. Meredith Borowiec from Calgary being a recent example. 2 killed and the third was attempted. Total time given was 18 months.

$15,000 a year to get a violent thug off the streets?

The sort that makes a habit of threatening old women for $50?

That's a bargain.

It wasn't a $50 swindle.  That's all he could get out of her.  It doesn't say how much he was demanding.

2014-07-22 05:32:08 PM
Honestly it'll cost taxpayers more like $70k to house him each year, but it's not just about the $50 either.

No big deal, he's probably scamming all of that off vulnerable people, plus the emotional distress and the costs of investigating him, which means that society is better off paying $70k a year to keep him away from the rest of us.

Technically incorrect.

The 18 months are on top of 18 months Borowiec spent in custody before she was released on bail.

That sounds like a failure in the Canadian justice system, even if it is the 3 years that jst3p posted about. Karla Homolka is another failure of the Canadian justice system.
