Ohhhh you have money to spend on your military?? Maybe we should stop paying to decommission all of your rotting Cold War nuclear submarines.

What a strengthened Russian military may look like

Russia's manufacturing of high-technology military equipment is so limited, they are forced to pay French shipbuilders 1.7 billion dollars for two Mistral ships.

And they had to send 400 sailors to France to be trained to use the Mistral ships.

So, to put this in perspective, he thinks he can strengthen the Russian military to match NATO, even though he's dependent on NATO countries to provide him with weapons.

Good old "feed army better than others" trick

Because getting into a showdown over who can spend the most on their military worked so well for Mother Russia the last time, right?

Should use a stealth bomber to drop a few million bucks right on Putin's doorstep to send the message that not only can we drop bombs on you whenever and wherever we want, but have plenty of money to waste in the process.

As long as Europe sucks on the hind teat of Russian oil, Putin can buy any weapons system he wants. Probably at bargain prices. You know, otherwise Russian oil might get scarce.

Russia was never good with navy. Ships never were Russian strong side, heh. Considering Europe is wide open for tanks and infantry, Russia never actually needed them...

Although Russia doesn't have money to spend on army. What Russia needs is drastic cuts for anything army, bureaucracy or internal security related and increase in spending for roads (farking Russian roads! fark them!), education and healthcare.

Not going to happen, though.

But I believe the problem is with Europe's distribution system. It's still oriented towards Russian oil deliveries.

It was more of a general money-spending pissing contest, not just military. We built a space shuttle. They couldn't figure out why the hell we would waste billions on one, so they built one too in their paranoia. France and the UK built a supersonic airliner. The Soviets wanted one too. Only every Soviet copy was a noticeably shiattier than its Western counterpart.

Isn't delivery not for a few more months?

If France wants to really piss them off they could back out of the deal and use them or sell them to someone else.

In fact, just donate one to Ukraine.

I'm not sure, but I think it goes back to at least Peter the Great and his decision that Russia needed to 'catch up with European culture and manufacturing techniques. They seen themselves as victims ever since... and sore losers at that.

Semi-related; try suggesting for a Russian - in particular with an education - that they are uncultured... nekul'turnyy is one of the worst things you can call a Russian - something I used to my advantage on a couple of occasions while on a UN mission in Africa.

They really like fighting. They have a traditional form of boxing called "Wall on Wall" where two groups line up and fist fight against each other. Whole villages would participate. They broke down in age groups with the children going first. They liked to do this on holidays.

Xenophoby. For 800 years Russians were routinely attacked, enslaved and oppressed by foreigners. There is no single generation in Russian history that haven't fought against invading foreigners, usually with huge losses. As a result, xenophoby became a national trait.

As for friendly or peaceful, Russians individually are friendly and peaceful, at least as long as they aren't drunk. Hell, I'm ethnically Russian, and I'm friendly and peaceful, and anyone who is going to dispute that better be ready to live the rest of his life without teeth. Russians even like foreigners - individually. But once you start take Russians as a group, and discuss foreigners as a group, instinctive, unthinking xenophoby just appears from nowhere.

yeah but every culture had some form of village to village battle thing in their past. the origins of lacrosse comes to mind, as well as all those european festivals where they shoot fire works at each other or play rugby

Grahor: Russia was never good with navy. Ships never were Russian strong side, heh. Considering Europe is wide open for tanks and infantry, Russia never actually needed them...

Their navy basically existed to try and close the Atlantic Ocean in case of a war. If the US can resupply Europe at will then that's pretty much it for any war in Europe. You're not going to beat NATO if the sea lanes of communication remain open- while we can fly troops to Europe we can't really fly over the tanks, bombs, and other munitions needed to fight a war.

Hence their focus more on submarines and surface to surface missile armed cruisers- they wanted to smash convoys, not kick in beachheads for amphibious landing or use supercarriers as mobile airbases for strikes behind the battle lines. When you're fighting a war on the same land mass where you live, a navy isn't near as important as if you're playing war as the visiting team.

Hollywood's probably happy to have Russian villains back in vogue, although, Putin pretty much has parodied in real life how fictional Hollywood Russian villains would act in the hands of terrible directors with awful scripts.

Better not, unless you are absolutely sure that the Russian in question will not be able to prove its high culture through beating you into a pulp... :)

Hey, that's not true! First of all, "Wall on Wall" fighting is an old entertainment, and strictly rural. It was a part of military training at one point. It's not practiced for generations! Okay, my father was participating in "wall on all" with neighboring school, so at least for one generation.

Second, it's not that Russians love fighting. It's just that fighting spontaneously happens where there are 2 or more Russians and alcohol.

And third, you try to live your life in a country where it's winter for 6 months and you can't see the sun for 4, and the only colors are grey sky and white snow, and we'll look at your sunny disposition!

There's a youtube video that shows Russian special-forces commandos donning body-armor & shooting each other. Learn to shoot while getting shot. They're nuckin futs.

Interesting fact, Ukraine manufactures a huge amount of military equipment for the Russian military. These factories are overwhelming located in the Donbas.

The last international tragedy was the Boston Marathon -- coincidence that Russians and Russian intelligence was involved before hand. Perpetrators were "no threat?"

Surprising that so many Russian army groups were assembled around the Sochi Olympics for "security" of the guests. Coincidence that is was so near Crimea, but who would notice a few soldiers wandering off?

With very recent memory, Putin and Syria were BFFs eating crackers like they owned the place. Sometimes that can be very distracting.
