...he will voice Shere Khan in Disney's 'The Jungle Book'.

That should be good.

Ritchie retelling the Arthurian story for the umpteenth time with Elba as Merlin might be decent as well.

Depends a lot on who gets cast as lead, of course.

As someone who just finished up first season of the Wire...Elba is the bomb.

He just needs to make some audiobooks as Stringer for like five hours, I'd fall asleep to that sh*t.

Supposedly Elba would play a Merlin-esque figure who trains and mentors Arthur.

So, not as King Arthur.

Really? The last person I'd want dealing with Arthurian legend (other than possibly Michael Bay and McG) would be Guy Ritchie. He doesn't do "gravitas" well.

I don't want Mordred to be the pissed off son of Arthur who accidentally steals the Holy Grail while drunkenly gallivanting with his friends, while Guenevere is the sex-deprived femme fatale who wants to set up Arthur to get killed fighting Saxons so she can be with Lancelot, all while Merlin, who replaced the Holy Grail so Arthur wouldn't notice it's missing, is desperately trying to get it back from Mordred before Arthur finds out. But Mordred has decided he hates his dad so much that he enlisted in the Saxon army, and is now out of Merlin's reach, so Merlin has to make a deal with Morgana la Fey to find Mordred and bring him back. All while speaking in nearly incomprehensible cockney accents.

I like Idris Elba.

I hope someone will argue that anyone playing a historical like Merlin should be white.

Luther is a terribly written show that too much credit because of the cast.

There is no basis for a "historical" Merlin, so he could be an Egyptian for all anyone could care.

I'd argue it because the first person to write of him based him on two white guys. But I seriously doubt Guy Ritchie is planning it to be "historical" in any sense, so it really doesn't matter who plays who.
I do hope Elba does a comically thick Welsh accent, though.

Neeson has already been in one Arthurian film so two might be too many

The Heimdall thing was partially Branagh's conscious decision to keep Asatru and other supremacists away from the movie. That and he knew Elba would be cool.

Well, since Heimdall was specifically described as "the whitest of the gods", I can see why some people would be upset. It'd be like casting Odin without the eyepatch. Non-essential, but it'd still irk me.

It's funny that Excalibur was made over 30 years ago and Neeson still looks grizzled.

On the other hand I'm watching The Mission right now and he looks more babyfaced. So maybe it was just the drunkenness of Gawain that made him look older.

I love Elba.... but I have utterly no interest in the same handful of British stories which keep getting regurgitated over and over and over again. King Arthur, Sherlock Holmes and Robin Hood should at very farking least be allowed to rest for a couple decades before dusting them off and beating that long-dead horse for the umpteenth farking time. Enough is enough already.

Sherlock Holmes has to solve a mystery that started with King Arthur and Robin Hood who were only able to solve half the problem because the Doctor interfered to save the daleks.
