(Short List)   This 100ft free fall ride might just be enough to prove the people of Denmark are insane   ( shortlist.com) divider line

Since when is a jump into empty space a "ride"?

/insert yo momma joke here

Been doing that at the Puyallup fair for a few years already.

I love roller coasters but fark those "rides" that are really nothing more than a free fall.

This proves they are the descendants fo crazy viking berserkers.  Dont fark with Denmark.

I'd do it once, and probably encourage others to do it once.

I'd go on a well made wooden roller coaster dozens of times and bring others on it dozens of times.

I would hardly give Denmark credit. SCAD rigs are made in England and they are installed all over the world (iirc - there are something like 10 in the USA).

I don't know why this video is making the internet rounds like this is something new.

I love roller coasters but damn, those wooden ones beat the hell out of you.

The only scary part of that to me is the landing (IE, landing weird and twisting or tweaking something).

I'm going to stick with the Supreme Scream

In the case of the supreme scream, it's actually _worse_ than a free fall because they accelerate you downward (vs just letting it drop via gravity alone).

Auckland's Sky Tower has a jump from 192 meters  You get up to just under half terminal velocity on the way down.

They had one of these carnival rides in the Wisconsin Dells four years ago.

Unfortunately for one 12 year old girl, carnival rides are operated by carnies.

I've been on one of those, and unless you are free falling, it's not "worse". I was buckled into a nice safe seat and held in place by a bar from the bottom and another bar from the top that supported my shoulders.

These guys pretty much just cut the cord and let you drop.

I was only referring to the speed. The supreme scream is also 3x the height, and I think the height makes more of a difference to people with a fear of heights vs being restrained.

// But, I'm not exactly a good judge of better/worse since I've done about a half dozen tandem skydives in the past few years (too lazy to get a license/pack a chute - a'int nobody got time for dat). Fear of heights isn't in my blood.

That looks so damn fun!

CSB;
I never got to ride a roller-coaster until I was 23. Grew up poor, family never took vacations, yada yada, just didn't happen until my 23rd birthday, my girlfriend took me to Six Flags in Arlington. We got there as the park opened, paid extra for a cut-the-line pass. I don't remember the names of any of the rides, but to start me off right we got in the front seats of the biggest coaster in the park. It's one that slowly climbs a big incline, then drops. I'm white-knuckled, shaking, on that climb. Apparently I'm a hard guy to get a read on, my GF said she had no idea how I would react, I think she kinda thought I would just system overload, shut down, and be done for the day (sooo very introverted). I lost it for a second on that drop, then focused in on the track, and the speed, and pure unholy joy overwhelmed me. Not before or since have I ever been that happy. We went on twenty rides that day. I haven't been back, haven't rode a rollercoaster since, but that was a drug I couldn't get enough of, and I'm glad I don't live close to any parks now, because I would be just like any other strung-out junkie, just trying anything to get another fix.

so....approximately 2 seconds, if my math is correct.

Thanks, but I'd rather jump out of a perfectly good plane

The onstage here in Utah that looks like the one you posted is cool, and gets your adrenaline pumping, but the truly scary part was that in the minute or so before we launched(the better of the 2 here is the one that starts on the ground, shoots you up, then drops you), the farking safety bars spontaneously released and re-set like 3 times, and none of the ride operators were actually paying attention.

Why are they wearing helmets? What exactly is a helmet supposed to save them from on that?

Maybe it's for if bounce out of the bottom net and onto the ground, or maybe if there's a "malfunction" in one of the operator's brains and they forget to raise the bottom net off the ground before dropping you, or maybe the whole ritual of strapping you in to the safety gear and harness makes your mom feel better about paying for you to be pushed off a building.
