McIlroy realized he's swimming in tail and doesn't need to tie himself down even if she is top shelf.

Ovechkin's top shelf tail realized he was still swimming in it.

Guess it's better than having a hockey stick smashed through the window of his Mercedes.

Did he get really close but then gag it away at the end?

I am not a fan of the Caps, but was a fan of Bruce when he was at Hershey and then with the Caps. He definitely got a raw deal in Washington. I would love to see Anaheim and Washington play in the finals so he can kick their butts.

Changing on-ice philosophy was the right call for the Ducks at the time, as Randy Carlyle lost his mojo in Anaheim when Chris Pronger was sent off and was pretty much suffocating them. Boudreau opened up their offense.

Still have this vibe that Boudreau is the Marty Schottenheimer of the NHL. A regular season winner.

I've always looked at it that coaches win during the regular season and GMs win in the playoffs.   Coaches are great at changing up lines and that sort of stuff which helps during long stretches in the season where injuries and the grind can get to a team, it's the coaches job to stop the 3-4-5 game losing skids.   But the GM needs to watch the team all season, figure out what pieces of the puzzle are missing and get it by the trade deadline for a deep playoff run.

(Excludes teams that are just stacked on opening night)

FWIW, I never thought those Caps teams under Boudreau were that good, anyway. Top heavy with offensive talent, sure, but their blue line left a lot to be desired.

Hell, who's been their most steady defenseman over the past five+ years? John Erkine? Alzner?

Kind of amazing how those coincidences keep happening, though, huh?

Ovechkin won the Richard Troply but has the lowest +/- in the league. That says more about the lack of personell around him, which leads straight to the top (bye bye McPhee) than Ovechkin.

Oh definitely the blue line has suffered.  Every year it seems we have 1 decent pairing, a hardworking but under talented 3rd pair and nothing else besides Green who may as well be a winger.  Carlson has probably been the "best" D man lately.

Erskine and Alzner pair well and work hard.   I hope to God we don't waste Orpik by pairing him with Green.   Carlson/Orpik would be a solid pairing.   Orlov seems to understand how to not let Green's weaknesses affect the play too much.   Hillen is decent but under talented and Carrick is just young and untested.  I'd LOVE to be able to drop Green and pick up a vet with deep playoff experience , maybe package him with Hillen (who isn't getting any younger?)

Or it could be that he never skates below the circles.

Orpik is a black hole of terribleness. He would make a shiatty pairing with Drew Doughty. If he isn't bought out by year three of that contract I will be stunned.

Yup.  Supposedly the reason for the breakup, too.  Subby's an idiot.  Probably a Pengwhines fan.

In most cases, scoring a 19 year old Russian gymnast would be a win, but it's Maria friggin' Kirilenko. Edge to Maria.

/I'm sure Ovie is crying himself to sleep on a big pile of money with lots of beautiful women.

It does point to the lack of a decent supporting cast.  But, it also points to the fact that Ovechkin is a me-only player who's primary interest is his own stats.

Fantastic scorer, but he's basically a superior version of Ilya Kovalchuk.  Washington will never win with him as their leader, and if the Caps were smart, they'd be kicking tires to see if anyone else would be silly enough to acquire him for a king's ransom.
