And to think, this is all because the Ottoman Empire backed the Kaiser in WWI, and a Brit was sent down there to weaken it. That f*cking Serb's antics are STILL effecting the present.

The reluctance of some ships to enter Tripoli docks has meant a shortage of fireworks, which traditionally light up the sky at the end of Ramadan, due next week. "We have fireworks in the night, but those are fireworks we wish not to see," says Seraj.

Well beggars can't be choosers, can they Seraj?

Fighting spilled across Tripoli's western districts after a battle between rival militias on July 19th and 20th for control of Libya's main airport left 47 dead, marking it as the most violent day since the end of the 2011 revolution that toppled Muammar Qaddafi.

Sooo what good is it if it's all shot up n' stuff?

Essentially accurate. It was not a good strategic move in the fight against religious terrorism. Ghadaffi was playing ball. Thinking toppling his regime would cause spontaneous order was naive.

The old order is collapsing. Grab territory while you can!

This is the time an enterprising crew with lots of mercenaries could move in and grab Libya, Algeria, Chad, Mali, Tunisia, and the Sudan. If they act fast they can get Egypt too! What a bargain! North Africa is on sale!

The Arab Spring was an odd issue.

You had people on the left and the right decrying anyone who said it would blow up and you had people on the left and the right saying it would blow up.

Surprising absolutely nobody who knows anything about the region's history.

ALL of it, not just the last 150 years.

So there's really only two options: Impose an artificial, foreign, outside peace, as has been done for the last 150 years since the British came in and pretended that a Pax Brittanicum could be the same thing as a Pax Romanum; or,

Leave it alone and let God, Allah, and Yahweh sort it out.

As awful as it is, as long as people keep coming into places and saying "You guys need peace! Let us make peace for you, because you're clearly too savage and primitive to manage it for yourselves, and we'll be happy to stay and administer the peace for you when we're through civilizing you," then this will simply ensure that once the peacekeepers leave, war will break out again.

Of course, that means that the peacekeepers have to be happy with whatever peace eventually resolves itself out of the chaos; if the Taliban wants to run most of Afghanistan and prohibit women from voting or Hamas becomes the elected government of Gaza, the "peacekeepers" have to like it and work with them all equally and not refuse to recognize Hamas to keep Israel happy or pretend that the Taliban wasn't duly elected or whatever. There are a couple of nations that do this, and not surprisingly, they don't have the same issues with terrorists attacking them (physically or rhetorically) that America does. But the US likes to think it's our job to fix everything the way we like it.

The best results have happened in the countries where Arab Spring has lost, but frightened powers enough to force them to do some weak-to-moderate reforms. Surprisingly, those were countries NATO and the US haven't bombed.

May be there is a lesson here.

Or may be not.

No. The Serb that shot the ArchDuke and caused WWI. Had there been no WWI, the Ottoman Empire may have still fallen, but it would have kept it's national boundaries instead of the deliberate cluster-fark designed intentionally to keep warring groups of people at each others' throats.

We need to get hard on this Libya situation.  This is something that needs to be licked right away.  It could open up and blossom into a very slippery situation if we don't meet it head on with full force.

armor helix: How did 21 Egyptian border guards end up dead due to fighting in Tripoli?

FTA: Egypt closed its border crossing on July 19th and warned of retaliation when a day later 21 border guards were killed by gunmen near the Libya frontier.

Because of the violence in Tripoli, Egypt closed it's border, which apparently pissed off some people who probably had some urgent deliveries of weapons coming through.

This middle east thing, I mean, really, it's just like trying to herd a bunch of cats. Sorry, kitties. But, mastering the art of herding kitties would be great training for our western leaders(?) Otherwise, the west should just get the hell out and leave the muddled east to the people who actually live there. Once shredded, we could always check back when the dust has settled.

You remove the brutal dictator in an arab/islamic state who held the various tribes/sects at bay from slaughtering each other and they revert to the natural state of tribes slaughtering each other ?!
Now that's just shocking, SHOCKING, i tell you..

Welcome to the Middle East.

More complicated than that in Libya, wiki says:

The original inhabitants of Libya belonged predominantly to various Berber ethnic groups; however, the long series of foreign invasions - particularly by Arabs and Turks - have had a profound and lasting influence on Libya's demographics.[160] Today, Libyans are primarily a mixture of Arab and Berber ethnicities, or a mixture of Arab and Turkish ethnicities.[160][161] The Turkish minority are often called "Kouloughlis" and are concentrated in and around villages and towns.[162] Other ethnic minorities include Libyan blacks, the Tuaregs, and the Tebou
