Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Most of America is wilderness. My friends in Europe are usually pretty surprised when I tell them just how much of America is simply undeveloped. Flyover states, generous rural zoning laws, government subsidized farming (America's government is usually bi-partisan when it comes to passing farm bills regularly).

If anyone has ever taken a trip on an interstate highway, there is so much space in America that simply hasn't been touched (or touched that much). Sure, you go into the urban areas of America and you find lots of people crammed in together like a sardine can... but when it comes to the entire country?

We have room for everyone who really wants to come live and work here, and be part of this nation founded on the very immigrants we should be allowing in with open arms -- not open bigotry.

No. It's because they don't bring anything new. We already celebrate Cinco de Mayo like St. Patrick's Day.

That map is missing Alaska. You divide Alaska into two separate states, and Texas still becomes the third-largest state in the country.

The US admits more immigrants than all the other countries admit combined.

If unemployment is high, why does it make sense to allow more in to compete for jobs that are there?  If unemployment is low, why does it make sense to keep people out who can fill those positions?

Immigration policy should always be about what is good for the country and not about feelings.

You know. They tried to get some money to beef up patrols along the border & add judges so that these kids could get to their hearings faster. But since it was Obama's idea, the House of Representatives voted against it because if it's HIS idea, they can't ever be for it.

Like I said, if you go into the urban areas, yes. It's unsustainable.

But there are many aquifiers and watersheds throughout the continental U.S. (along with Alaska), that can support way more people than there currently are.

Nothing. It's going to change anyway.

But if you start accepting more human beings from latin america, you take human beings away from the critically stressed areas there, and put them into areas that are not so stressed.

Alas, the brown folk in New Mexico and Arizona who became Americans not because they crossed the border but because the border crossed them haven't seem to have learned the trick of turning white. Joe Arpiao managed it in just a generation and he thinks that proves his superiority.
