I've seen this happen 3 times.
I've read about it happening at least 50. If you drive a truck for a living how do you not know the height of your vehicle? Or not look for the posted height restrictions?

Probably didn't show up on the trucker GPS.  Same way people drive into lakes and onto railroad tracks.

The bridge itself was severely damaged and the company responsible for this fark up ended up footing the bill IIRC.

Two hippie truckers were going down the road when they saw a low bridge, then pulled over.  They got out, measured their rig and discovered it was three inches too tall.  One hippie looked around and said, "I don't see no fuzz, man.  I say we go for it."

A joke told to me by my retired trucker, uncle.  He retired in the 80's if that tells you how old he was.

I think every town or city has one of these bridges. Littered with every way possible showing the height of the bridge yet it's constantly slammed into. I know a bridge in my hometown that has been hit over 300 times.

Signs showing the hight of a bridge allways add a little for safety.
Truck driver knows this and often take a chance that they can pass. Another trick is letting air out off your suspension, which gives you another couple of cms.

11' 8"? How merciful. NYS's parkway overpasses can be as low as 6'11".

/rarely get video, though, so thanks

There are a couple of clips in the 11foot8 video where RV's remove their air conditioning units.  My brother did this once with my parent's pickup topper camper.  He slowly hit a gas station roof or something and the air conditioner got knocked off.  He reversed to get out of it and the air conditioner fell onto the hood of the truck.  I laughed pretty hard at him and still do on occasion.

2.4m (just under 8 feet) in Paris. Later pics on this blog show that they adopted the crash beam concept from the infamous 11'8" bridge in Durham, NC. As in Durham, it doesn't stop idiots from trying it.

WTF was that 18-wheeler even doing on the parkway in the first place? Makes you wonder how some of these dinks ever got their commercial license.

Yeah, this sign doesn't help either. Nearly had some jackass in an 18-wheeler run me off the road the other day as they don't really take these kinds of turns very well.

I noticed that too, and wonder if the trailer manufacturer measured the height with or without the AC units taken into consideration?

I met a guy who took his AC unit off on the way to where we were camping.  He got routed to the bridge by road closures, so he just had bad luck.

My guess? Stupidity. Also, nowadays they rely on their GPS, which doesn't have a "truck" mode.

I have suggested Google make one for their Maps (I mean, you can get one customized for walking, biking, car, public transport, and airplane) so why not one for trucks?

Seems like they would just have to go through all their footage and identify each bridge. I would think they're already working on that. I'm actually surprised it hasn't been done yet.

I figure most of the time they will get on the parkway accidentally and once youre on you cant turn around so they hope for the best. Yeah the gps doesnt account for height.

I used to see this happen fairly often when I lived on Long Island.
