"A few salvos of grapeshot and the invasion - what else is it? - will be turned back. It will stop. Those who are present, who have been housed, fed, and given legal advice in various improvised shelters, should be rounded up, taken to the border, and told to walk or swim, as the case may be, back into Mexico. If they refuse to move, firepower can be used to encourage them. "

Can anyone possible comment about something like that without falling into the Godwin trap?  I mean Jesus!  They are kids dude!

No one in the real country will object to something as clear and straightforward as shooting criminals, especially when the results are immediate and satisfying.

If this is the best pic the author could manage, he'll be dead within the decade. Thankfully.

he's for "shooting criminals" so if he runs a red light or jay walks, the cop shouldn't give him a ticket, he should be shot.  It's like a bad 1st season Next Gen episode.

Au contraire subby, I agree with the author. This is A Modest Proposal for our border crisis. It's a shame none of you seem to see it...

If not for the constant influx of immigrants, the US would be losing population.  We need more people, if only to allow us to borrow more money.

That can't be real. The writer must surely be pulling a Swift one.

The satire stops being satire once people start testing recipes for stewed Irish babies.

The problem with satire in the digital age, is it brings out the scumbags that don't see it as satire. The Author was obviously trying (and failing miserably) to make some kind of point. I think the only point he managed to illustrate is that some American Spectator readers are real sick farks.

PS, a bit of a pointer to the author- If you are going to do a satirical piece about killing children, you might want to mention somewhere in your piece that you aren't actually advocating killing children. Because if you don't, you kinda come off as pure evil.

Or, y'know, suggest something a little more outre, like grinding up the corpses as feedstock for chicken farms in those border states.

I think it's clear it is satire (there is a picture of Swift and "A Modest Proposal"), but it is poorly written and poorly timed satire that is only going to put the wrong ideas into some people's heads.

We already have people that believe we should be executing any and all people that cross the border illegally, don't give them any more ideas.

Don't whine because you don't know what A Modest Proposal was.  Poe's law still applied in 18th century Britain(even if it hadn't been named yet).

I'm not hispanic and while I have little problem with us taking in those kids, I'm of the firm opinion that immigration 'needs' reform in a major way with special attention paid toward legalizing those people already here.

That said, I think I would nut-kick anyone who sincerely suggested to my face that we fire upon children of any nationality for any reason at all.

Unless, of course, they were zombies.  cause fark zombies.

I, for one, would like to thank Roger Kaplan for writing this article which sums up the entirety of Republican ideals in a few short paragraphs: it's morally acceptable to murder children, as long as they are not white.

Yes, some might say this article is satire; but Republicans are too stupid to understand satire. And since the American Spectator is a mainstream Republican publication, the inarguable conclusion is that this Mainstream Republican writer in a Mainstream Republican magazine is advocating that Republicans murder children. Fortunately, Republicans are (mostly) too cowardly to take him up on this idea.

They're going to be genocidal farkwits regardless of how they take a bit of satire.  We can't control the fact that they're essentially Nazis.  But we can satire their positions in every even remotely intellectual circle.

Satire isn't undone because people take it seriously/literally.

It's undone when there's no HINT of actual satire which, based on how far political discourse in this country has plummeted, is a tough nut to crack.

Here's the difference between Swift's Modest Proposal and this dangerous "satire":

Only a very few freaks at their most deranged would ever consider eating children.

But a lot of mostly normal people wouldn't mind killing them.

Satire needs to be outrageous, and a lot of people would consider this pretty reasonable, actually.

What do you expect.  It's American Spectator.  They've got luminaries like Ben Stein writing for them.  Their audience is obviously made up of retards who can't get a 7th-grade literary reference.

None of the Modest Proposal stuff shows up on mobile, so it does read like your average tea partier calling for mass murder of children. To be tipped off that it's satire, you would have to presuppose that tea partiers would be incapable of doing such a thing.

Except the actual article shows no sign of being satire - the author is not ridiculing the point of view he is voicing.

Voicing an extreme solution then taking it down half a notch, but very much in the same vein is not satire.

I think a lot of people don't even know what "satire" is. You can show them the entire Onion website and they'll think half the stories are real, and the rest just kind of slanted. You can't even explain it to them.
