Which can be laid right at the foot of the War on Drugs. Meth is a loser drug and no one who could get cocaine or heroin or other formerly legal hard drugs would bother with it except for a select few who want to be high now.

It's kind of easy to make, but it's insane to even think someone would try if they could skip down to walmart with a scrip for some breaking bad quality meth from Phyzer. People only try to make it because they can't get it anywhere else. And it's not like meth is bad in and of itself. It's just a strong stimulant. We used to feed it airplane pilots for long missions.

Seriously, most all of the "harm" drugs do is actually from their status as contraband more than anything else. Time to stop being silly so this kind of clusterfark need never happen again.

I totally agree with you, but I think one major problem the War on Drugs won't solve is what will happen to all those people who are no longer employed by that industry. Not only the 30 billion or so the local police and Feds spend, but the results of a smaller prison industry, a number of criminals potentially brought out of jail and reintroduced to society, and a large number of people with little or no income who rely on the drug trade to pay for things.

The War on Drugs is at least partially about status quo for the monied elites. We're really talking about soma here. A feel good drug that keeps the inequal and unhappy masses at bay. A form of population control, even, in the form of gang shootings and prison.

Now, I'm not saying there aren't solutions. Social programs for drug victims and former drug offenders. Pouring that war money on retraining. But in the end, you aren't really ending the poverty problem and in fact might be making it worse. Throw in education problems. The 25 billion or so probably pales in comparison to the amount you'd need to fund all those programs nationally. And of course you've got a worthless Congress and a Supreme Court full of assholes.

Also some states simply do not want to legalize even marijuana. How do you deal with that intraction?

I'd like to see a graduated change. First would be to remove marijuana from schedule I. Then some more legalization programs succeeding state by state. It might take two more decades for us to see any success in Congress or SCOTUS.

It's sad how slow this country is moving. I place the blame solely on the GOP.

If I may speculate, I would hypothesize that someone added hydrogen chloride when caustic soda was required.

But....  just a few more months and we'll win the War on Drugs.
Then we can get back to the War on Prostitution.  We're making real progress on that one.

Collateral damage from unregulated sex trade tends to be limited to STD's spread to spouses, etc.
Collateral damage from war on some drugs:  Burnt out of your home/shot to death `accidentally' when no-knock is executed at the wrong address, etc.

Treat all drugs of misuse just like alcohol and get over it

My brother and his wife got displaced a couple of weeks ago when the authorities found the meth lab the couple on the other side of the duplex had built in their attic.  They hazmatted the heck out of the place.  Still living in a hotel on the property management company's dime, but should get their stuff back soon and move into a new place soon.  On the positive side, their respiratory problems have gone away.  And an FYI, this is NOT covered under their renters insurance.

So this is one of the reasons it's sooooo much better to rent than own?

I own a single-family rental house I wish would go away. Unfortunately, the nice lady living there isn't the type to construct a malfunctioning meth lab.
