Oh good. I was getting antsy waiting for another round of congressional "Look at how much I don't know about making nuclear weapons!"

So... soft power diplomacy and sanctions backed up with the implied threat of hard power ends up being more productive than refusing to sit down and talk and empty saber rattling gestures?

Huh, go figure.

/I'd love to have been a fly on the wall when McCain got this news.
//I'm sure that little vein on his forehead was throbbing fit to beat the band.

Add in Israel getting pissed off big time and hardliners losing their grip in Iran

It's clear they are hiding their REAL nuclear weapons in baby formula factories.

See this vial of plutonium I'm holding? Well, this is just some baby shampoo with green food coloring I had one of my aides make. No, if someone were to detonate this they would be able to destroy New York City! A small part but maybe they could set off a dirty bomb at Wall Street! All of those high-speed trading computers and maybe some hipsters would be lost to us!

Is that what you want America? Do you want nuclear Armageddon? If not I implore you to start another war in the Middle East. Nothing bad can come of it. Certainly not the inadvertent creation of an Islamic caliphate.

Thank you for listening.

Iran had more than 200 kilograms (over 250 pounds) of 20 percent enriched uranium when the agreement was reached and began reducing it shortly after.

Well, 200kg is 440lbs... which IS over 250lbs, so I guess technically they aren't wrong.

Shoot. Now the GOP will never be able to elect a president on the "If it's an even year it must be Bomb Iran Time!"

No more oil wars. Sorry, GOP. Can't have.

We have only ourselves to blame for the troubles in Iran. If we hadn't screwed with their politics in 1953, they'd be less inclined to look into nuclear weaponry.

Bah.

My troll headline was approved for two hours before being withdrawn for this one.  :(

"In another failure of Obama's string of foreign failed policy failures, Iran fails to not complete the elimination of their failed stockpiled enriched uranium "

With fail tag to complete the failure!

I demand a point still.

LA Times also has a little more lengthy article on the subject.

I don't know if the AP is really giving us the whole story.

We'll see in a few years.

There are many reasons why they distrust the west. Probably cause we have screwed them over for 70+ years.

During the Iraq invasion, soldiers found a building that absolutely glowed with radiation. It was unguarded. The first flush of news contained claims that here were the fabled WMDs. Then, it turned out that this unguarded building contained the nuclear waste from Iraq's pre-sanctions nuclear research reactor.  Then the story abruptly disappeared.

Enough nuclear waste to build a skillion terrorist dirty bombs. Unguarded. Open to anyone.

The people who drum beat for war don't know how to think of anything that hasn't been run through the propaganda farms.

To be fair, the explosive force of bomb that would make a dirty bomb terrifying would be pretty devestating to any populated building.  If al qaeda could manage placing that kinda weaponry in the US, they'd do so.

Do you somehow think Iran not having nuclear weapons makes war less likely?

You should probably reassess your mental model of the United States's goals and behaviors.

ArkAngel: Add in Israel getting pissed off big time and hardliners losing their grip in Iran

I have absolutely nothing to base this on, but I should think a less-nuclear-capable Iran takes something OFF Israel's plate - which at this point, they would absolutely approve of.

Unless you think Israel has some hardon for war with Iran at any cost - a terrifically stupid idea for Israel, chiefly because they'd have to go through Iraq (and/or Jordan/Syria) to get there in the first place. The Israelis are nothing if not good stragerizers.

Thanks Obama!

No, really, thanks for not riding the hurpydurp train and starting a war with them like literally every GOP hawk was screaming for. Thanks for trying to initiate dialog, and look, it's working.

Next on the list: can we stop sending money and arms to Israel? It would be great if we weren't the arms dealer to the next great 21st century apartheid state.

Romney position on Iran

Well, let's - let's start back from there and let's talk about where we are. This is, of course, President Obama's greatest failing, from a foreign policy standpoint, which is he recognized the gravest threat that America and the world faced as - and faced was a nuclear Iran and he did not do what was necessary to get Iran to be dissuaded from their nuclear folly. What he should have done is speak out when dissidents took to the streets and say America is with you and work on a covert basis to encourage the dissidents. Number two, he should have put - put in place crippling sanctions against Iran. But instead of getting Russia, for instance, to when - when he gave in our - our missile defense system, to agree to - to stand with those crippling sanctions, he gave Russia what they wanted, their number one foreign policy objective, and got nothing in return...

... Finally, the president should have built a credible threat of military action and made it very clear that the United States of America is willing, in the final analysis, if necessary, to take military action to keep Iran from having a nuclear weapon. Look, one thing you can know and that is if we reelect Barack Obama, Iran will have a nuclear weapon. And if we elect Mitt Romney, if you elect me as the next president, they will not have a nuclear weapon...

... Well, it's worth putting in place crippling sanctions. It's worth working with the insurgents in the country to encourage regime change in the country. And if all else fails, if after all of the work we've done, there's nothing else we could do besides mil - take military action, then of course you take military action. It is unacceptable for Iran to have a nuclear weapon. We will not allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon. This term unacceptable has been applied by several presidents over history. And our current president has made it very clear that he's not willing to do those things necessary to get Iran to be dissuaded from their nuclear folly. I will take a different course. I will make sure that the sanctions, diplomatic pressure, economic pressure and support of insurgents within the country help them become dissuaded to get away from their nuclear ambition.

So that's two in the "Israel wants war with Iran for no articulable reason we can think of."

In most of the "Israel gearing up for Iran war" news stories, there's a very clear "IF" - if Iran completes (or gets close enough to completing) a bomb - because it's a fantastically stupid idea for Israel to attack Iran for every reason other than eliminating a nuclear threat.

Which now, Iran isn't.

We should have the CIA engineer a coup to install people that want to make nukes. This war was slated for this decade and Iran isn't doing its part here.

Sure they have turned it into harmless fun for hours of play, and they can now sell cutting edge Iranian technology to help rid the world of nuclear waste.

A shame Iran was stuck in the 1950's and did not invest in wind or solar power instead of that ATOM stuff.

Yes, and if you want to spread it for more than a few feet then that will require force, which, in bombs, is generally of the explosive variety.

Israel has been saying that Iran is a a few years away from having a nuclear weapon for over 20 years trying to get the US to do their dirty work. They have been lying about the seriousness of the threat for may years.  I imagine they aren't too happy with people that say inflammatory stuff about Israel being wiped off the map. They may not be  itching to get into a war, but I have no doubt they'd be just fine with Iran getting farked up especially if they can get someone else to do it. Iran cooperating (apparently) makes that less likely and I could see that bothering some in Israel.

Israel and the US have been training Kurdish and other flavors of Iranian rebels inside Iran since before we went into Iraq this last time. If we're not going to invade Iran for Israel, then the Kurds and others will do initial fighting and we'll be dragged into the war in Iran by those plucky little Kurds being slaughtered by those Zoroastrian corpse-leaver-outers.

So in other words, you don't understand how radioactive material works...

The 'bomb' part is pretty much incidental winds, water currents, weather patterns, convection currents, people, animals, these can all spread the material. Hell, it might even be considered counter productive to have an explosion at all, since you may be able to do more damage with radioactive materials that are venting into the air, but nobody knows.
